  5. Fellowships • Can support • Research (travel, materials, assistants, etc.) • Living expenses at home • Conference travel • Stipend • Examples • NSF GRFP (Graduate Research Fellowship Program) • NESSF (NASA Earth System Science Fellowship) • SDSU Inamori Fellowship

  6. Dissertation Grants • Fund dissertation research • Research assistants • Equipment • Travel • Examples • NSF DDRIG (Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant)

  7. Private Organizations • Due date varies based on organization • Range of amounts • Examples • San Diego Zoo • Margot Marsh Biodiversity Foundation

Government Funding Solicitations • Usually larger in size • $100,000-$1,000,000 • Graduate students cannot be PIs • Examples • NASA ROSES (Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences) • NSF SBE (Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences) • NSF CNH (Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems)

  9. SDSU Foundation • When SDSU foundation needs to be involved • Usually larger grants • Anything with indirect costs • Collaborative work • Anything not paid directly to you • PI on grant • For larger grants, official PI generally will be adviser (Li)
