  1. Increasing Illinois highway speed limits Civic Action Project By: Zachary Molokie

The Problem • Illinois currently has one of the slowest highway speed limits in the country. • Illinois current speed limit is 65mph, Texas has a speed limit of 75 and 85 in some places • More people use the highways in Illinois then Texas creating more traffic having to move at a slower rate. • To travel 100 miles in Utah and Texas will take you about 1 hour and 30 minutes. To travel 100 miles in Illinois will take you almost 2 hours which is over a 30 minute time difference.

People effected and why • This issues needs to be addressed because that half an hour more it may take someone could mean them losing there job. • Many of my family members travel from the suburbs to Chicago. The drive takes around an hour at the rate of 65mph, they both have to leave early to get there and if there is an accident they risk being late. • If they were able to travel at a rate of 75mph they would be able to leave later because it would take less time to get there and less people would be in a rush leading to calmer drivers and less crashes. • I know a lot of people that travel to the city f0r work everyday. All of them have said that they do not like the speed limit and wish that it would be increased • Wen the speed limit is so slow it tempts driver to drive faster because they know that in other states it would not be considered speeding and when more people are speeding and in a rush it causes more crashes.

The solution • My solution is simple and effective. • My solution is to create and propose a bill to congress requesting that the state Illinois adopt the speed limits of Texas or Utah of 75mphI • The bill will also include that all signs would have to just have a 7 posted over the 6 and a news special letting people know that the peed limits have changed and to be aware that police will be looking for any speeders to keep the roads safe.

  5. People I will Contact will contact Illinois governor and explain to him my solution the problem. I will discuses why I feel my solution will be effective and how to put it into action. I also plan on contacting Illinois department of transportation and ask them what they think of my plan and if they have anything helpful to add to my bill.

  6. Effects with the solution • If my solution is put into action the speed limits will increases for 65 to 75mph • Travel times will be shorter • People will not always be in a rush leading to less crashes • People that travel a far distance will be happier
