  1. What’s the Purpose of the Port?

  2. Fun Facts • Cape Canaveral is the oldest geographical name still in use in the Western Hemisphere. • In 1520, a Spanish ship captain sent a small party of men ashore. They were attacked by Indians using arrows made from the cane that grew there. For this reason, the captain named the place Capo de Canaveral which means “place of the cane bearers”. • Port Canaveral is a man-made deep water harbor. It was dedicated in 1953. At the dedication ceremony, people ate 5,000 pounds of fried mullet, 300 pounds of baked beans, 500 gallons of cole slaw, and 20 gallons of pickles! • It began as a small shrimp and oil port, but has grown into a major international seaport.

  3. Fun Facts • Port Canaveral is the only quadramodal port in the world. This means cargo and goods can be moved by sea, land, air, and space. • Jetty Park is home to a community of feral cats (domesticated cats that have returned to the wild). These cats help keep the rodent population down. They are fed and taken care of by volunteers. The feral cats are regularly captured, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and released. When they are captured, their ears are “bobbed” to show they have been counted and cared for.
