  1. Minerals Notes

  2. Minerals are: Naturally occurring, inorganic solids that have a specific crystal structure and a definite chemical composition.

  3. 2. Inorganic: Made from material that never “lived” (not from plant or animal remains) 1. Occur Naturally: Found in nature, not man-made 3. Solid: Tightly packed particles with a shape. 4. Crystal Structure: mineral is made from small crystals that line up in a certain pattern and shape. 5. Definite Chemical Composition: Made of certain amounts of certain elements; like a recipe…

  4. Building blocks of rocks Other Mineral facts: • Minerals that contain useful metals or nonmetals are called ores. • Each mineral has a chemical composition and a set of properties that determine its use and value.

  5. Properties of minerals help determine their usefulness.

  6. Chemical Properties: 1. Ability to burn- can it be burned to provide heat or energy (fossil fuels)?

  7. 2. Reacts to Acids- if mixed with an acid…is there fizzing or release of gases? .

  8. Physical Properties: 1. Hardness- how soft or hard a mineral is. Uses Mohs’ Hardness Scale for rating.

  9. 2. Luster- how light is reflected from mineral’s surface.

  10. 3. Color- observable color of mineral

  11. 4. Streak- the color made when mineral is scratched on a tile.

  12. 5. Cleavage/Fracture- how a mineral breaks apart or splits.

  13. 6. Density- the amount of mass in a given space. Density =mass/volume Example using TBB http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/geology/leveson/core/graphics/density/density_def.html Properties of Minerals PPT Earths Surface http://www.slideshare.net/brandolina1/basic-properties-of-minerals
