  1. AB-CO ReviewRequirements for LHC Power Converter Commissioning Reply from AB-CO M.Vanden Eynden on behalf of the AB-CO group

  2. Contents • System Architecture • Gateway installation (CO-HT) • WorldFIP (CO-IS) • Timing (CO-HT) • Databases (CO-DM) • Alarms (CO-AP) • Applications (CO-AP) • Post-mortem (CO-FC) • Summary

  3. System Architecture Alarms screen Client application (JAPC) Logging DB Measurement DB Logging client CMW commands + subscription Alarms PM Archive FGC Gateway LynxOS PC gateway Post-mortem data Timing 50Hz status Commands WorldFIP bus (50Hz cycle) FGC FGC FGC FGC FGC FGC FGC FGC FGC FIP Diag … 30 FGCs

  4. Gateway Installation • Gateway PCs must be installed and tested prior to each series of commissioning tests • Gateway PCs are assembled and tested in the CO-HT lab • Hardware test and functional validation of the CTR-I timing receiver module • Integration and burn-in procedure of the complete system: • Pentium IV processor and mother board • CTR-I timing receiver module • CC144 WorldFIP FullFIP2 bus arbitre (2.5 Mbits/s) • System configuration • Naming, Lynx/OS boot parameters, “transfer.ref” • System boot procedure test and timing test

  5. Gateway Installation • Gateway PCs must be connected to the WorldFIP and timing networks and these connections must be validated • This is part of the In-situ installation procedure as already applied today to LHC Pt 8, 1 and 7 • WorldFIP validation procedure is made in several steps : • Electrical qualification of the segment (copper and optical transmission) • Dynamic test of the segment trunk with FipDiag agent • Final validation of the segment in partnership with PO ( segment tested at nominal conditions with all FGCs agents connected to the bus). Major attention is given to this, including reservation of time slots in the global LHC HW commissioning planning

  6. Contribution from : R.Brun WorldFIP • Connectors with appropriate addresses should be allocated to all of the converters • The addresses for the converters must then be supplied to PO in a form that can be easily read programmatically. A database would do. So far, too much has had to be done by hand. • This information is currently supplied to PO in Excel format • It will be introduced in the LHC reference DB early November 2005 • Drop cables to power converters must be installed when the converters are installed in the tunnel • This is done by TS • A FIPDiag device must be installed (and powered) on each WorldFIP segment • This is the case, as explained in the previous slide. Some problems were encountered with the powering of the FipDiags (220v not present, cables stolen in the tunnel) • The WorldFIP segments must then be tested before being handed to PO • Cf previous slide • Support for the FDM WorldFIP library must be provided • A dedicated resource is allocated in CO for this support. Problems detected so far where successfully fixed

  7. Contribution from : J.Lewis Timing • A timing signal must be supplied to the timing receivers in the gateways during commissioning • For the moment, only a GMT signal is required. For LHC we will also require timing events. These will also be required if a “global” post-mortem is ever needed during commissioning. • A dedicated LHC VME MTG is operational and generates UTC time to SR 8, 1 and 7. • Machine events on the LHC timing cable still to be defined between PO, OP and CO

  8. Timing • At some point, we must have a timing signal supplied to our lab (866-1-C14) to develop event support • A complete upgrade of the timing distribution (GMT and BST) to several Prevessin buildings was made this summer in collaboration with BDI and TS (Bat 864, 865 and 866) • Fibres are in place to distribute all timings (SPS, LHC, …) to Building 866. We need to pull a VH4 link between your lab and the 866 star point • Better to wait for the re-installation of all MTGs in the CCC, foreseen in November 2005

  9. Contribution from : K.Sigerud Alarms • Alarms from the power converters and gateways must be visible on the alarm console during the short-circuit tests • Operational and available for the short-circuit tests • Demonstrated at previous short-circuit tests • We typically define our devices in our Alarm ITN database a few weeks before each test. The Alarm Team must import them into the main LASER database before the tests actually start. • An agreed update procedure is in place • Relatively quick updates are possible • Support must be provided during commissioning • One phone number, 79898, for urgent issues • One email: alarm.service@cern.ch • Assistance is given as fast as possible • The support required during HWC has been described in the document evaluating resources. Currently only best effort available.

  10. Contribution from : R.Billen, P.Le Roux Databases • Over the coming months we need help and support from the Data Management section to put into place a system to manage the configuration of the power converters and inventory of assets • This collaboration has started actively: • Asset classification, identification and properties (Zory) • Layout structures up to WorldFIP addresses (Pascal, Markus) • As we install and commission more converters this will become more critical • Templates in the model will streamline a repetitive process

  11. Contribution from : E.Hatziangeli Applications • The sequencer used to run the tests must continue to evolve as the tests progress and must take into account the interlock tests and commissioning with magnets • Sequencer is supported and evolve with the user requirements during the LHC SCT (F. Chevrier is responsible for this package). Interlock test is taken into account in the tests procedures implemented by the sequencer and validated by MPWG (M. Zerlauth). The sequence for magnet test will be implemented in the sequencer when the document which describes the test procedure will be available. • Fixed displays must evolve in line with operators’ requirements • Fixed Displays are supported and evolve with the user requirements during the LHC SCT. All present requirements are being implemented (Set of the Day, PC status FD). J. Wozniak is responsible for this package, with help of Delphine • The logging application must be able to record data from all power converters involved in the tests for their entire duration • Measurementclient application is under preparation to handle the recording of the PC data for the LHC SCT (8 and 24 hours Heat run tests). (M. Pace is responsible for this package) • Data will be filtered into Logging DB (C. Roderick responsible for meas and logging dbs) Slide

  12. Post-mortem • The post-mortem system will be required when the power converters are connected to the magnets for circuit commissioning at the end of the year • We are currently participating in the specification and prototyping of the system • This aspect will be specifically covered in the Post Mortem talk of this session (A.Rijllart, R.Lauckner)

  13. Summary (1/2) • In general the requirements for commissioning of power converters are being fulfilled • Thanks to an excellent collaboration between the PO and CO teams and rigorous follow up of: • the HW installation process through regular AB/CO control system installation meetings • The software requirements in the LHC HWCWG • There must be a continuous evolution of the applications that are used during commissioning • AP section is aware of this aspect and resources are allocated for this purpose in order to guarantee the best possible responsiveness

  14. Summary (2/2) • During the commissioning tests time is very short, so support must be provided for all of the systems involved so that any problems do not delay the progress of commissioning • Resources and responsibilities are in clear in CO: • Installation and HW problems → HT section(C.Dehavay as installation coordinator) • Alarms, fixed displays and Sequencer → AP section • So far, progress has been quite good • The Hardware is already installed for 3 LHC sectors (Pt 8,1 and 7) and Pt4 will be done in November 2005. This represents a total of 59 Gateways (28 for PO) • Software follows the evolution of the requirements and has been demonstrated in the last short circuit tests • Continued progress critical on resources identified at the LHC HWC review
