  3. Basic Operations Device/Hardware • Home Button • Volume • Lock Rotation/Mute Button • Charging & Syncing (cables) • On/off • Hard turn off • Onscreen keyboard • iPod apps on an iPad

Using Your Device (iOS 5) • Home button-1& 2 hits (3 hits optional) • “Bottom Row” (up to 6 of your most frequently used apps or ones that you want students to use easily) • Camera (iPad 2 or iPod Touch 4) • Front & Back (main) cameras • Front camera for “Face Time” or “photo booth” • Back Camera for pictures & videos • Find your photos & videos • Edit photos (crop, rotate, red-eye) • Create albums • Email, slide shows

Settings (iOS 5) • Wi-Fi- some apps require it (Dragon) • iCloud (requires WI-FI for back-up, storage) • Updates arevavailable “through the cloud” • iTunes, documents, photos, apps, back-ups….stored on the cloud. • You no longer need to physically “sync” the device to a computer (and probably shouldn’t unless directed to do so by IT) • General settings…. • Passcodes, Restrictions • Email (some issues with Novell) • Multitasking Gestures (iOS 5 only) • Bluetooth • Keyboard • Accessibility Features…..

Accessibility Features • Personalize Features in Settings>Accessibility • (iPod Touch 32/64 GB, 4G & iPad 1 & 2) • VoiceOver • Touch the screen to hear a description of the item with the VoiceOver screen reader. (Requires different touch to navigate & activate apps) • Rotor- can manage rate and how VoiceOver reads. Flick up or down to change direction, rate • Zoom • Magnify the entire screen of any application up to five times normal size and move left, right, up, and down to view any portion of the screen up close. (Requires different touch to navigate & activate apps) • Large Text • Increases font up to 56 pt in Contacts, Mail & Notes

  7. Accessibility Features cont. White on Black For higher contrast, you can change the display to white on black. Mono Audio If your hearing is limited in one ear, turn on Mono Audio to route the sound from both channels into one earbud. Speak Selection The BEST addition to iOS5!! Hold finger over text until you see a “magnifying glass”…either speak that individual word or select all> then speak or “drag” the 2 ends to select the desired text>the speak. Does NOT change the way the iPad interacts like VoiceOver does. Speak Auto-text Automatically speaks auto-corrections and auto-capitalizations

  8. More Accessibility Features… Assistive Touch Brings up “gesture” menus for navigation Triple-click Home 3 hits of home button can bring up accessibility options or choice of options so you don’t have to go through the settings menu

Getting Started • You must have an iTunes account to download any apps (even • free ones). iTunes accounts are linked to an email address & require a password. • Redeem gift cards • “Buy” free apps • You can download apps directly • to the device (from the App Store) or • to your computer (from iTunes) • You cannot get apps from any other source

Setting up an iTunes Account: Create iTunes app store accountwithout a credit card (on computer) • If you already have a private iTunes account, click on your name> sign out. • Click on the App Store Tab (at the top). • Download & install a free app (scroll down on the right column to free apps) • Click create a new account by clicking continue, agreeing to the licensing agreement, entering personal information including email & password. • You can select None or Credit Card as your payment option. • When finished, you will get an email verifying your account. • Open the email & follow the link to activate your account.

  13. Syncing to “The Cloud” • It is possible to sync your content (apps, books, photos, documents, etc) to “the cloud”. • You can use iCloud to back up all of the above (5G of free storage) • You need to set up iCloud on both the computer & the device and have an iCloud account.

Syncing to the computer • If you can sync to your computer….. • Open iTunes on the computer (you can set your device so this will automatically happen) • Connect your iDevice using the USB cable. • Select your device in the left hand column. • Wait while the device and iTunes sync apps, books, music, photos, etc. • You can change the sync options at any time 

  15. You can also organize your apps, folders and screens from the computer plus check which apps you want to sync.

Searching for Apps on your iDevice App Store • Click on the App Store icon on your device • Click on one of the categories at the bottom of the screen. • Tap on the search window to enter key words (or the name of the App). You can refine your search even more using the search filters at the top of the window… (Education, last 31 days, 4+ stars, Free….)

Downloading Apps to your device • Tap on the name of the App to get more information… • Look at screen shots • read a more complete description (click on More…) • look at reviews • When was it last updated • Click on the price window • if you want to install it. • Click on install app. • Enter your password. • iTunes automatically closes • when you select install, • just click back on the App Store to continue (no need to wait for app to install.

  21. Getting Apps- from the computer • Click on iTunes Store in the left column • In the iTunes Store, click on the AppStore • You can narrow the AppStore to education or other areas or stay` within the general AppStore.

Searching for & getting Apps from the Computer • Search using the search window or select from one of the categories. • Click on the name of the App to get more information… See screen shots, read a more complete description, look at reviews, updates, etc. Click on Download If you want it. Resync your device.

Getting more than APPS • iBooks • Get free iBooks to your device. • Open iBooks • Go to Store> put in author, title or “free book” in the search window • Select book to get more information • Click on “FREE” button> Get Book • Requires password Let’s try it….if you have a book open, go to Library (top left)>Store> in search window put in iPad user guide for ios 5 (it should appear before you write it all out). Select the title, select FREE, select Get Book.
