  1. Rolling On Objective: Students will apply Newton’s first law of motion to the behavior of a toy car.

  2. What is Newton’s 1st Law of Motion? • An object will remain in motion or at rest unless acted upon by an external force.

  3. What force slows the toy car? • Friction • Friction is a force that opposes the forward motion of the moving car.

  4. Friction (pushing books across a bare floor) • Would it be easier if the floor were carpeted? • Would a rolling cart help in moving the books? • Is the friction force always the same?

  5. SPEEDDISTANCETIME

  6. Speed • Measures how far an object travels in a certain period of time. • How do you measure the speed of a moving car? • Miles per hour; meter per second • Speed = distance / time

  7. Activity 7 • Materials needed: toy car, connector, stopwatch, measuring tape, friction towel, tracks, masking tape • Follow all direction on activity 7 sheet • Complete all steps • Watch the same experiment performed in space
