  10. Chronological Bible Discipleship Iva May and Dr. Stan May week forty-nine Romans

  11. End Times Chronological Bible Study Our Goals: To make a one year journey through the story of the Bible (His Story) To be able to identify the 14 Bible eras and connect them to the other eras To understand the spiritual formation of the individuals plugged into His Story Missions Church Today Gospel Silent Return Captivity DividedKingdom Kingdom Judges Conquest Exodus Patriarch Creation

  12. Church Era • Jesus foretold the creation of bodies of believers who would meet together regularly for worship, instruction, service, fellowship and mission. • These churches are built on the confession that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus responded to Peter’s confession, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” by introducing His other sheep as the church, “And I say to you that you are Peter (petros), and on this rock (petra) I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)

  13. Context • As the Gospel continues to spread, more Gen-tiles embrace the Messiah • The merging of Jews and Gentiles into one church creates conflict • Paul writes numerous letters to address these problems • The Roman church was a prime example of the struggle to re-solve Old Testament Law with New Testament grace • Paul was moved to write to the Roman Christians • He had planned to visit but was prohibited from doing so • Instead, he writes his Epistle to the Roman church • His hindrance becomes a blessing to the saints through the ages

  14. Overview • One theologian describes the Bible, and the New Testament specifically, as a message on missions • “The New Testament is uniquely and preeminently missionary--the greatest missionary volume ever produced. Every section of it was written by a missionary, with the primary object of meeting a mission-ary need and promoting missionary work.”(Robert Hall Glover-1946) • Paul demonstrates this idea throughout the book of Romans • He declares three truths about the missionary in-tent of the Gospel • The Gospel is for all people because all are descended from Adam and all have sinned • The Gospel changes the status of people before God • The Gospel produces missionaries to spread its message to all people

  15. Key Truths • Because ALL people are cursed by sin, ALL people need to hear the Gospel--their cure for the curse.

  16. Church Era Romans 1, 2, 3, 5 & 10 KINGDOM MISSION The Gospel is for ALL People The Gospel Changes the Status of People The Gospel Produces Missionary People

  17. The Gospel is for All People Romans 1:16-17

  18. Gospel is for All People • The Gospel is Sufficient for Everyone • Regardless of ethnicity • The promise of the Gospel comes through the descendants of Abraham • The Messiah comes through the line of Judah • The benefits of the Gospel are extended to all Gentiles • No people group of any kind is excluded from the Gospel • Regardless of awareness of need • Romans 2:12 - “For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law...” • Those who attempt to keep God’s law and those who ignore it both need salvation, therefore all men become guilty before God • They have spoken evil • They have thought evil • They have held evil attitudes • All people stand condemned before a holy and perfect God Jews Greeks

  19. Gospel is for All People • The Gospel is Sufficient for Everyone • Regardless of religion • Romans 3:9-10 ~ “What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, ‘There is none righteous, not even one’” • No religion or cultural heritage can save sinners • The Gospel is good news for people of all heritages • The Gospel is Effective for Everyone who Receives It • Romans 10:11-13~ “For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for ‘Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ “ • While the Gospel is for everyone, not everyone will be saved • Willful faith in Christ is required • Salvation is extended to everyone, but an individual response by man is required

  20. Discussion So what is the number one problem facing man? SIN! Every other world problem-past, present and future-flows from the effects of sin on creation Do people today take sin seriously? Why not? Why do even believers tend to treat sin lightly?

  21. The Gospel Changes the Status of People Romans 5:1-2 & 12-21

  22. Gospel Changes status • There is a Change in Status before God for those who Trust Christ 5:12 Sin and death 5:1-2 Grace from God & peace with God 5:15 5:15 Sentence of death Gift of grace 5:16 5:16 Judgment & condemnation Justification 5:17 Reign of death 5:17 Reign of life Judgment & condemnation for all men 5:18 5:18 Justification offered to all men 5:19 5:19 Declared sinners Declared righteousness 5:21 5:21 Sin reigned in death Grace reigns through righteousness

  23. The Gospel Produces Missionary People Romans 10:14-17

  24. Gospel Produces Missionaries • The Gospel is intended to Birth a New Com-munity of People • From all nations • Romans 1:5 ~ “…Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedi-enceof faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake…” • To form one united community • Romans 15:7-9~ “Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God. For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers, and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy”

  25. Gospel Produces Missionaries • How can those who have Re-ceived the Good News keep it to Themselves? • People do not enter eternal condem-nation because they have never heard the Gospel • People are condemned because they are sinners • Many from all Nations wait to Hear the Good News of Forgive-ness of Sin through Christ • But they cannot believe that which they have not heard • They cannot hear unless someone tells them

  26. Discussion If we believe Paul’s words about those who have never heard the Gospel, what should we be doing as a church to take the Gospel message to all the nations? How do we go about doing that? Paul wanted to preach Christ where He had not been named (Rom 15 : 20-21). What gets in the way of church participating in that same goal?

  27. Conclusions • Without understanding who he is in Adam man cannot grasp the seriousness of his state be-fore God nor appreciate what God has done for him in Christ Jesus. • The Gospel is inclusive bringing people from all walks of life together and making them king-domcitizens. • The Gospel message must be believed in order for people to be saved; it must be heard to be believed, proclaimed to be heard, and someone must go to proclaim it.

  28. Bible Trivia QUIZ The Books of 2 Corinthians, Romans, Acts(1pts) • According to Paul, what did Abraham do obtain righteousness in God’s eyes? • “For what does the Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’ ” (Romans 4:3) • What two destructive influences entered the world through one man? • “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.”(Romans 5:12) • How long is a wife bound to her husband? • “For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband.” (Romans 7:2)

  29. BONUS ROUND Bonus Questions (2pts) • How many lashes did Paul claim to have received from the Jews on five different occasions? • “Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes.”(2 Corinthians 11:24 ) • What was the name of the young man who fell out of the window to his death while Paul preached all night? • “And there was a young man named Eutychus sitting on the window sill, sinking into a deep sleep; and as Paul kept on talking, he was overcome by sleep and fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead.” (Acts 20:9)
