In week 2 of our chemistry class, students will turn in their signed safety contracts while aiming to demonstrate 80% mastery on a lab safety quiz. The day's agenda includes a bell ringer discussion on the nature of gas changes, followed by an interactive notebook setup and completing Cornell Notes. Homework involves writing tiered questions, summarizing notes on lab safety, and peer grading. Through collaborative learning and engaging activities, students will enhance their understanding of chemistry's fundamental concepts and laboratory practices.

Chemistry Week 2 Turn in your signed safety contract into the turn in bin.
Monday, August 25th Objective: SWBAT demonstrate 80% mastery on their lab safety quiz, understand the study of chemistry and list the steps for how to use a mass balance. Bell Ringer: During the can demo, do you think the gas in the can was undergoing a chemical or physical change? Explain (use the word because!)

Nature of Science Puzzle • Aspects of Science: Tentativeness, Creativity, Observation, Inference, Subjectivity, Empirically Based, Socially Culturally Embedded. • Scientific investigations begins with a QUESTION. • Explanations are developed from a combination of collected data and what is already known.
Can Demo & White-boarding • Each pair needs a WB, marker and washcloth. • DRAWING PICTURES, answer the following questions: 1. What is happening when the gas is turned on? 2. What is happening when there is a flame? 3. What is happening when the flame goes out? 4. What is happening at the end of the demo?
Safety: What-Not-To-Do Lab • Work with your table partner. • Look at the pictures, and use your knowledge of lab safety to determine what is wrong with the picture. • Record the problem and how it should be fixed to make that situation safe for the lab.
EXIT SLIP • DILQ • D: What did you do in class today? • I: What did you find interesting? • L: What did you learn in class? • Q: Questions? (Must write at least 1) • What is your Homework?
Introduction White-boarding Draw: Favorite sport to watch or play Draw: What do you want to be when you grow up? Write: 3 words that describe you Draw: Your favorite person, place or thing. Draw: Your Dream Vacation?
Syllabus Jigsaw • Get into groups (colors on desks), and go to your assigned lab table. • Assign group roles, and write them down on post-it. Turn in! • Read your section of the syllabus and record 5 important/main ideas (5 min) • Then every member of the group will share out what they learned. Record what they share.
