  10. Guided Practice • Teacher: 1. Will show the problem on the board • Students: • Take 16 seconds to analyze the picture equation • Take 29 seconds to match the picture equation with the appropriate chemical reaction with your shoulder partner • Be ready to share when Mr. Ghosh says SWAG

  11. Guided Practice #1 • C + O2 CO2 • MgCl2  Mg + Cl2 Synthesis

  12. Guided Practice #2 • 4 Al + 3 O2 2 Al2CO3 • 2 H2O  2 H2 + O2 Decomposition

  13. Guided Practice #3 • Zn + 2 HCl ZnCl2 + H2 • 2 Li + Cl2  2 LiCl Single Replacement

  14. Guided Practice #4 • Zn + 2 HCl ZnCl2 + H2 • AgNO3 + NaCl  AgCl + NaNO3 Double Replacement

  15. Guided Practice #5 + O2 • CH4 + 2 O2 CO2 + 2 H2O • 2 KBr + BaI2  2 KI + BaBr2 Combustion

  16. Independent Practice Take some time to practice balancing and classifying the following equations 85% Practice makes Perfect

  17. Closing • What are the different types of chemical reactions? • What type of reaction does the following equation represent? AB + CD  AD + CB

  18. Write the Learning Target Warm Up: 4 Minutes Stay in your own seat You should be working SILENTLY • Complete the Warm Up on the half sheet of paper you got at the door Classify and balance the following reaction: ___ZnCl2+ ___AgNO3___Zn(NO3)2+ ___AgCl

  19. Agenda • Warm Up [7 minutes] • Notes/Examples [15 minutes] • Guided Practice [12 minutes] • Independent Practice [15 minutes] • Closing[4 Minutes]

  20. How do we write equations? C10H16 + 16 Cl 10 C + 16 HCl

  21. To Write Chemical Reactions... Step 1: Write out formulas for all compounds in the reaction.. Solid zinc reacts with Hydrochloric Acid to form Zinc (II) Chloride and Hydrogen gas

  22. Important!! Some elements are diatomic (come in pairs): Iodine Nitrogen Bromine Chlorine N2 I2 Br2 Cl2 Hydrogen Fluorine Oxygen H2 F2 O2 INever Bring Classwork Home On Fridays

  23. To Write Chemical Reactions... Step 2:Use key words to determine which compounds are reactants (left side) and which are products (right side) Step 3: Balance the equation Solid zinc reacts with Hydrochloric Acid to form Zinc (II) Chloride and Hydrogen gas

  24. Example 2: Iron + Water  Iron (III) Oxide + Hydrogen

  25. Example 3: When lithium hydroxide pellets are added to a solution of sulfuric acid, lithium sulfate and water are formed.

  26. Guided Practice • Teacher: 1. Will show the problem on the board • Students: • Take 31 seconds to write out the compounds in the reaction • Take 59 seconds to write, balance, and classify the chemical reaction • Be ready to share when Mr. Ghosh says SWAG

  27. Guided Practice #1 Sodium Sulfate + Zinc (II) Hydroxide  Sodium Hydroxide + Zinc (II) Sulfate Double Replacement Na2SO4 + Zn(OH)2 2 NaOH + ZnSO4

  28. Guided Practice #2 If a copper coil is placed into a solution of silver (I) nitrate, silver crystals and copper (I) nitrate are formed. Single Replacement Cu + AgNO3 Ag + CuNO3

  29. Guided Practice #3 When propane (C3H8) is burned in oxygen gas, carbon dioxide and water are produced. Combustion C3H8 + 5 O2 3 CO2 + 4 H2O

  30. Guided Practice #4 When solid magnesium ribbon is burned, it combines with oxygen gas in the air to form magnesium oxide. Synthesis 2 Mg + O2 2 MgO

  31. Independent Practice Take some time to practice writing the following equations 85% Practice makes Perfect

  32. Closing • What are the steps in writing a chemical reaction?

  33. Write the Learning Target Warm Up: 4 Minutes Stay in your own seat You should be working SILENTLY • Finish #1 from the Pre-lab on the Lab Handout When zinc metal is dropped into Nitric Acid (HNO3), the reaction produces zinc (II) nitrate and hydrogen gas.

  34. Agenda • Warm Up [7 minutes] • Lab Purpose/Expectations [4 minutes] • Pre-Lab [6 minutes] • Types of Reactions Lab [34 minutes] • Closing[2 Minutes]
