Precipitates in Double Replacement Reactions • Many DR reactions occur in water- that is, in aqueous solution • When dissolved in water, many ionic compounds “dissociate”, or separate, into cations and anions • If the rearrangement of the ions forms a solid it iscalled a precipitate. • A precipitate is a solid produced during a chemical reaction in a solution.

Last we determine if a precipitate will form using the solubility chart AgCl + Na1+ + NO31- Note that the AgCl did not ionize, because it is a “precipitate”
