  2. Origins of PBL at UD: In 1992, a handful of science faculty members, concerned about how well their students were learning, began to use PBL in their courses. In 1993, six faculty members submitted a proposal to the NSF; it was awarded in 1994. During the next four years, PBL courses were created in many departments. Numerous PBL workshops were held. In June 1996 an international PBL conference was held at UD Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education

  3. ITUE was created in 1997 to promote reform of undergraduate education through faculty development and course design and to infuse the institution with a successful model of instruction. Institute Fellows receive hands-on experience in employing active learning strategies and effective use of technology in their classrooms. In addition, Fellows are eligible for discretionary funding to support transformation of their courses. Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education

Features of ITUE: • Faculty-led training and interactions: • Week-long experiential workshop • Special follow-up sessions • Review and sharing sessions • Brown-bag lunches • Faculty mentoring faculty: • Leaders mentoring new Fellows • Experienced Fellows mentoring new Fellows • Experienced Leaders mentoring new Leaders • New Fellows working in groups Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education A safe and collegial environment for learning

Filling a Need: • First year: • 55 Fellows in summer, mini-workshop in January • Second year: • 40 faculty Fellows plus 4 GTAs, 8 visiting faculty • Full-week added in January: 35 UD + 5 visiting • Third year: • 25 faculty Fellows plus 4 GTAs, 19 visiting faculty • Another full week in January 2000: • 22 faculty Fellows plus 4 GTAs, 19 visiting faculty • and 9 Delaware K-12 • Mixing off-campus visitors with local faculty adds • credibility, motivation, and variety.
