  3. Introduce • Using your tenths grid, shade in 0.2, 0.7 and 0.5 to show each number. • What is the fraction for each grid that you shaded? • Now, with the hundredths grid, shade 0.02 and 0.07 to show each number. • What is the fraction for each grid that you shaded?

  5. Teach • Look at this decimal: 0.85 • Which grid, tenths or hundredths, would you choose to show this number? Why? • How many columns of 10 squares would you shade in? • How many more small squares should be shaded in? • How many squares out of 100 should be shaded in to show this number? • Which number is greater, 0.8 or 0.85? How do you know?

  6. What is a Decimal? • A decimal is a number that uses place value, and a decimal point to show part of a whole.

  7. One Way: Model Draw a hundredths model. Shade 85 out of 100 parts to show 85 cents. Read: eighty-five hundredths Write: 85/100 or 0.85 Another Way: Place Value Read: eighty-five hundredths Write: 85/100 or 0.85 0 8 5 Read and Write Decimals Write 85 cents as a fraction and as a decimal.
