  1. Junior Conference 2013-2014

  2. Don’t Get left behind! Now is the time to make sure that you are on track to graduate next year. You don’t want to be left behind when all your friends have moved on.

  3. Three things needed to graduate next year The required 26 credits for recommended/distinguished plan. Pass the required five STAAR tests. Maintain good grades and Attendance!

What if I decide PAP is not for me after school starts? • You must stay in the class a minimum of 3 weeks. • You must attend tutorials. • You cannot have any zeros. • A meeting will be held with your parents, your teacher, your counselor, an administrator and you. • During the meeting, we will decide if you should be allowed to drop to a lower level or be required to stay in the class on an improvement plan. So decide now if you are willing to put forth the effort required for a PAP class.

  7. Texas Scholars If you take at least two classes eligible for college credit (ex. Dual credit or AP classes) you will become a Texas scholar. You will receive a medallion to wear at graduation.

  8. STAAR Tests • You must pass each subject • English 1 • English 2 • Algebra 1 • Biology • US History

  9. Attendance • To receive credit in a class, a student MUST attend at least 90 percent of the days the class is offered.   14. College Visits • Juniors can miss up to two school days for college visits but you must bring a note back from the college that you have visited. Top Ten% Rule In accordance with Texas Education Code (TEC), §51.803, a student is eligible for automatic admission to a college or university as an undergraduate student if the applicant earned a grade point average in the top 10 percent of the student's high school graduating class, or the top 7 percent of eligible 2014 summer/fall freshman applicants for admission to the University of Texas at Austin, and the applicant: (1) successfully completed the requirements for the Recommended High School Program (RHSP) or the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP); or (2) satisfied ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks on the ACT assessment or earned on the SAT assessment a score of at least 1,500 out of 2,400 or the equivalent.

  18. How much will college cost? • New state law requires that all Texas public schools use a net price calculator developed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board • www.CollegeForAllTexans.com

What types of financial aid are there? • Scholarships- free money (you must apply) from the university or outside organizations. • Grants- free money from the state or federal government based on financial need • Loans- either parent or student loans must be paid back • GI bill- you serve in the military then they give you money for college or parents can pass down GI bill to their children http://www.gibill.va.gov/

  20. How do I find scholarships? One great website is E-Scholarship Monthly www.collegeguidanceconsultants.com Username: boswell Password: boswell It is possible to find scholarships now even though you are not a senior yet. Check with Clubs Associations Church Employers Relatives Local scholarships at Boswell (next year)

  21. How can I get a head start on college? By taking AP and Dual Credit Classes now! For example taking government and economics this summer or next school through the dual credit classes will earn you 6 hours of college credit. That is half a semester! Another example would be take the English language AP exam and score a 3 and you would earn 3 hours at UTA. Take that same English language AP exam and score a 4 or 5 and you would earn 6 hours at UTA AP and dual credit can really pay off in keeping college costs down.

  22. What if I want to play sports in college?   25. Career Fields available: Community Colleges (TCC) Community colleges offer training in specialized careers in 18 to 24 months programs. FINANCIAL AID and SCHOLARHIPS!!
