  1. Motor Oil & Lube, Oil, Filter (LOF) Mr. Lombardi

  2. Why Change Motor Oil? • Remove Suspended Contaminants • Replenish Additives

  3. Motor Oil • Spark Ignition Engines • SA through SM • SM: For all automotive engines currently in use. Introduced November 30, 2004, SM oils are designed to provide improved oxidation resistance, improved deposit protection, better wear protection, and better low-temperature performance over the life of the oil. • Compression Ignition Engines • CA through CI-4 • CI-4: Introduced in 2002. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002.

  4. API Certification Mark • An oil displaying this mark meets the current engine protection standard and fuel economy requirements

  5. API “Donut” (Gas) • 1 - Gasoline engine oil categories • 2 – Viscosity Grade • 3 – Energy Conserving 1 2 3

  6. API “Donut” (Diesel) • 1 - Diesel engine oil categories • 2 – Viscosity Grade • 3 – NOT Energy Conserving 1 2 3

  7. API “Donut” (combo) • 1 - Gasoline engine oil categories • 2 – Diesel engine oil categories • 3 - Viscosity Grade • 4 – Energy Conserving 1 2 3 4

  8. Oil Viscosity • Multi-grade oils such as SAE 5W-30 and 10W-30 are the most widely used. • They are thin enough to flow at low temperatures and thick enough to perform satisfactorily at high temperatures. • For use under all but extremely hot or cold conditions

  9. Oil Viscosity

  10. Conventional Vs. Synthetic • Conventional motor oils are derived from petroleum • Cheap • Many contaminants

  11. Conventional Vs. Synthetic • Synthetic oils are replicas manufactured from chemicals in a laboratory • Have a pure base • Increase drain intervals • 2-5 X

  12. Oil Filter • Used to strain the engine oil thus removing abrasive particles. • Spin-On - can-like container • Cartridge - look like small air filters which fit into a canister.

  13. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Remove Filter • Using an oil filter wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise until it's free. • Be careful with it, it's still full of old oil.

  14. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Prepare Filter • Clean filter mounting surface • Lubricate the rubber gasket on the end of the filter with some new oil. • Prime filter (if feasible)

  15. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Install Filter • You don't need a wrench to install the new oil filter • 3/4 to 1 Full turn after the gasket touches the housing

  16. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Drain Oil • Remove plug • Be careful of HOT oil

  17. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Lube Chassis and Suspension • Ball Joints • Tie Rod Ends • Drive-train • See Pic Next

  18. Lube Chassis

  19. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Check Differential Fluids (if equipped) • Rear Axle • Transfer Case • Front Axle • See Pic Next

  20. Differentials

  21. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Check Tire Pressure • Fill to Tire Specs

  22. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Install drain plug to manufactures torque specs

  23. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Refill Motor Oil • Check ShopKey for quantity and Viscosity • Check Under Hood fluids • P/S • Brake • Coolant

  24. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Run Engine • Check for oil pressure • Check for leaks • Check ATF

  25. Lube, Oil, and Filter • Shut off Engine • Lube hood and door hinges • Check oil level • Top off as necessary

  26. The End
