Morr, University of Illinois at Chicago, DMR 0513415 • Nanoscale structures open unprecedented • possibilities for manipulating fundamental • quantum effects on the atomic level and for • understanding the unconventional properties • of correlated electron materials. • The PI has identified three novel quantum • phenomena arising from these possibilities: • Emerging complexity in Kondo screening • of magnetic nanostructures • Self-generation of spin nanostructures • in correlated electron materials • Exotic Transport Properties of nanoscale • Josephson Junctions oscillations in the complexity of Kondo screening self-generated spin nanostructures nanoscale Josephson junctions These results open the path to many new applications in the fields of spin electronics and quantum information technology.

  2. Nanoscale Structures and Novel Quantum Phenomena in Correlated Electron SystemsDirk K. Morr, University of Illinois at Chicago, DMR 0513415 Outreach: Over the last five years, the PI has been working with the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in Chicago on developing the new Science Storms exhibit, which covers national science benchmarks for physics and chemistry. As a member of the Science Storms Advisory Committee, the PI has given a series of talks on “Emergent Behavior on the Nanoscale” for the staff and committee members at the MSI. The PI presented several public lectures on “Mysteries of the Quantum World” as part of the Inventive Genius Lecture Series at MSI and the Skokie Public Library. Education: The PI is overseeing the training of two graduate students, J. Figgins and A. Rebola, and one high-school student, Jacob Gruber, who attended the PI’s public lecture at MSI. The PI has also developed a new advanced graduate level course series on condensed matter physics.
