  1. Finding Area of Complex Shapes Unit of Study 11: Understanding Area Global Concept Guide: 3of 3

  2. Content Development “Composing and decomposing complex shapes are valuable activities. Activities such as these, give students the opportunity to connect what they know about the properties of shapes with what they are learning about area. This hands-on approach to learning makes geometry more effective and enticing for the student. As you teach the activities in this lesson, look for opportunities to encourage students to explore, make observations, visualize, compare shapes and classify using geometric characteristics.” -GoMath TE p. 427A While Go Math refers to the figures in this GCG as “complex shapes” , many resources will use the term “compound ” or “rectilinear” to describe the figures.

  3. Day 1 • Essential Question: How can you find the area of shapes that are not a rectangle? • Pose the GoMath “Example Problem” from SE p.428 without showing the shape on the page. Give the students a laminated construction paper model of the room, dry erase markers, rulers and color tiles to explore and find the area of the room. • Continue practice with finding the area of other construction paper complex shapes and discuss the efficiency of strategies used. • As students are exploring, ask questions to probe their thinking. • What do you notice about these shapes? • Does the formula for area of a rectangle work for these shapes? • Is there a more efficient way than counting to find the total number of the tiles? • By the end of day 1, students should be able to explain strategies for finding the area of complex (rectilinear) figures.

  4. Day 2 Essential Question: What strategies can you use to find the perimeter and area of complex shapes? • Students should apply what they learned from day 1 to problems 2-4 on SE p. 429. • Use HOT practices to select and sequence student strategies for sharing. • Show a variety of strategies for solving the same problem. • Discuss strategies that are most efficient. • When discussing #4, address how students were able to figure our the missing measurement. • After sharing and discussions, students should complete “Unlock the Problem” on SE p. 430. • By the end of day 2, students should be able to explain strategies for finding the missing measures and area of a complex shapes.

  5. Day 3Enrich/Reteach/Intervention • Essential Question: How can you apply the formula for finding the area of a rectangle to complex shapes? • Reteach – • Have students trace various complex shapes on grid paper to practice decomposing the shape into rectangles in order to use the area formula. • GoMath Reteach p. R87 • Online Florida Intervention Skill 48 • Core – • IXL Area of Complex Figures • Students can create a blueprint for their dream house and find the area of the floor of each room. • Enrich - • Have students create a relevant word problem involving the area of a complex shape from the problems on Measuring to Find Area of Complex Shapes • Area and Perimeter Game- Area Level 3 • Have students create a tangram picture on grid paper and find the total area of their picture. Mix the pictures and areas up and have the students match the areas to the correct pictures.
