What is the SmartWay Transport Partnership? • Voluntary partnership between EPA and the freight industry that will: • Increase energy efficiency and national energy security • Reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases • Emission Reduction Goal: • 150 million barrels of oil each year (12 million cars off the road) • 33 to 66 million metric tons CO2 annually by 2012 • 200,000 tons NOX annually, plus PM and air toxics benefits • Three components of SmartWay Transport: • Corporate Partnerships • National Transportation Idle-Free Corridors • Rail/Intermodal Operations

Why Do We Need SmartWay Transport? • Truck and Rail: • Consume over 35 billion gallons of fuel • Account for nearly 20% of transportation energy use • Produce approximately 350 million metric tons of CO2 • Impact will increase dramatically in next decade • Growing economy • Increasing internet sales • Faster delivery schedules 45 Billion Gallons 35 Billion Gallons 2012 2003

What are the Corporate Partners doing? • Carriers: • Measure current environmental performance with the FLEET Performance Model • Commit to improve performance within 3 years • Earn logo with 40% efficiency rating for CO2 • or 25% for CO2 and significant NOx and PM reductions • Shippers: • Commit to increase amount of freight shipped with SmartWay Transport Partner Carriers within 3 years – weighted by Partner performance • Assess and commit to improve facility transportation emissions within 3 years • Earn logowhen ship enough freight with Partner carriers to achieve 50% FLEET score

Some Emission Reduction Strategies FLEET Measurements • 5-minute idling rule • 510,786 gal. diesel – 5,670 tons CO2 • Automatic shut-off • Speed management • 547,980 gal. diesel – 6,083 tons CO2 • 65 mph • Engine set to avoid speeding • Wide-based tires • 14,823 gal. diesel – 165 tons CO2 • 400 trailers/10trucks; 3 months – 70 addl. • Automatic tire inflation • 100 % of trailers • Liquefied natural gas • 1 ton NOx – PM negligible • 42 trucks – will have 62 trucks
