  1. Fronts When a warm and a cold air mass meet, there is a weather change. The area where the two air masses meet is called a FRONT.

  2. Differences Between Air Masses • Warm air masses contain warm, moist air and are light in weight. • Cold air masses are cooler and more dense, so they sink down.

  3. When a Warm Air Mass Moves Into An Area of Cold Air – A Warm Front • The warm air is is lifted up over the cold air. • The lighter, warm air forms a gentle slope over the surface of the denser, cold air. • The warm air is cooled an forms large masses of clouds • Brings about steady precipitation – rain or snow – and covers a wide area

  4. When a Cold Air Mass Moves Into An Area of Warm Air – A Cold Front • The cold air pushes under the warm air. • The heavy, cold air pushes the warm air up quickly • The warm air is cooled and condenses very quickly, forming cumulonimbus clouds • Brings about violent storms, rapidly falling temperatures and a rise in air pressure
