The enormity and complexity of health care problems and the paucity of proper infrastructures for health care delivery systems motivated them to develop a comprehensive concept of community development on the basis of self reliance and without depending upon the public sector financing. The concept started unfolding itself in concrete actions when the Baqai Foundation acquired a large piece of land on Super Highway just at the outskirts of Karachi and established the first ever rural Medical Centre supported by secondary and tertiary health care facilities in 1976. Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) The institute is situated on Lehtrar Road, in the vicinity of a small village, Nilore, which falls within the district limits of Islamabad. The campus of the institute is spread over an area of about 150 acres. It is a residential campus and all students stay in the hostels at the institute. 18. Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences & Technology (GIKI) The Genesis of the Institute can be traced back to the early 50's when Mr. Ghulam Ishaq Khan(late) became acutely aware of Pakistan's dependence on foreign expertise and imported technology. Out of his frequent interaction with the foreign and local experts emerged the idea that a Education with Perfection in engineering sciences and production technology ought to be established in the country, a center whose standards of education are comparable to those of its counterparts in the advanced countries. The transformation of this idea into a practical proposition took place in December 1985 when the Benevolent Community Care and Infaq Foundation donated Rs. 50 million for setting up an institute in the N.W.F.P for promotion of science and technology. Mr. Ghulam Ishaq Khan (late) Founder EligibilityCriteria for GIKI The applicant must secure an overall score of at least 60% excluding NCC in Inter

  20. University of Engineering & Technology (UET) The University of Engineering and Technology (main) located in the northern part of Lahore on the historical "Grand Trunk Road (G.T. Road)", near the magnificent Shalimar Gardens built during the great Mughal Empire. The institution started its career in 1921 as the ‘ Mughalpura Technical College ’. Later it became the ‘Maclagan Engineering College’, a name given to it in 1923 when Sir Edwards Maclagan, the then Governor of the Punjab who laid the foundation stone of the main building, now called the Main Block, which still retains its majesty despite the wear and tear of over eight decades. At that stage the institution offered courses of study in only two disciplines; Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

  22. NED University of Engineering & Technology (NEDUET) The NED University of Engineering and technology is the oldest institution now in Pakistan for teaching and turning out Graduate Engineers; it is in the Public Sector – i.e. Government owned – having begun initially as an Engineering College in 1922 established by subscriptions from private donors. The University retains the initials in honour of the principal donor for that College – Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw in its name! Like other such Government owned institutions in developing countries, it has had over the years to overcome various handicaps ranging from shortage of funds to “brain drain” of Faculty Members as well as students. Nevertheless, because of its transparent admission policy which has established its reputation over the years, it attracts the best students – including even some foreigners lacking resources for seeking admission in Universities of developed countries!
