Year 11 Key Dates - Calendar The Queen Katherine School • Progress Review 4 – w.c. 14th October • Consultation Evening – 24th October 5.15-8.15 pm • W.c.20th January – Revision and exam timetable sessions • Progress Review 5 – w.c. 27th January • Year 11 Mock exams – w.c. 10th Feb • Progress Review 6 – w.c. 31st March • Year 11 Leavers day – 9th May, but compulsory revision sessions

  4. New Science exam dates The Queen Katherine School • Biology Unit 1 (B123)- 13th May • Biology Unit 2 (B456) - 15th May • Chemistry Unit 1(C123)- 15th May • Physics Unit 3 (P7) - 23rd June.

  5. Controlled Conditioned Assessment The Queen Katherine School • All done in lessons, some research at home. • Low, Medium or High. • Highlight subjects that you study. • Balancework load with other commitments. • Deadlines and dates are subject to change

  6. Changes to Year 11 curriculum The Queen Katherine School • English – All blue groups now entered EngLang in November so they can count Speaking and Listening Controlled Assessment. Green groups on 2 year course. (If students get a C or above – continue onto Eng Lit) • Science – students resitting and repeating Core Science if did not get a C. • Maths – 2 groups selected to November exam to sit foundation and then hopefully move on to higher paper in summer. • Eng Lit, Geography, History & RS – SPAG marks ( up to 5% of final grade) • New BTEC Work Skills for Green students.

Support for November exams • Silent study room on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime in US. • KHA – Additional Study Support Thursday (week 2) after school in LRC. • Revision Skills (Week 2 Wed 5) – additional core classes, conversational language, optional revision skills and independent study • English – Targeted revision groups afterschool (3.30 – 4.30 pm) - Mon 14th Oct (Aiming for A*, Aiming for C) - Tuesday 15th October ( Aiming for A, Aiming for B) - 8th and 10th October All abilities exam queries • Maths – Revision Tuesday lunchtimes and Thursday afterschool 3.30 – 4.30. Revision guides and workbooks £2 and Mathswatch DVD is £4.

  8. Progress Reviews and SMART targets The Queen Katherine School • Progress Reviews in October, Jan and March. Grades ‘honest grade’ by teachers of what they think student will get if they continue to work hard and develop as expected. • SMART Targets (specific, measurable, academic, realistic, time framed) • Target and Questions on key pieces of marked work. • Purple Pen of Progress.

  9. What is Assertive Mentoring? A system to maximize outcomes for targeted students; involving the following: • A system to support students that are struggling to meet their target grades. • Students are matched with a mentor and commit to meet every 2 weeks for 10 minutes. • Assertive mentors feed back predicted grades to their mentees, challenge under-achievement and agree interventions, based on SMART targets set by teachers. • These agreements are then communicated to their classroom teachers and parents. • Deadlines for work are checked and any missed work is chased.

  10. How can parents help? • Assertive Mentors: • Will discuss interventions with mentees in fortnightly meeting. Support students to help them change their behaviours and increase their organisational skills to achieve their targets. • Are rigorous in following things up. • Use rewards and sanctions if work is / is not completed. • Communication is very important. Parents / carers also: • Encourage their child to complete work, seek support and advice when needed and try to provide quiet place to work at home. • Ensure their child’s attendance at any additional lunchtime or after school classes that have been agreed with his/her mentor. • Liaise with their child’s mentor about progress. Next round of AM will be launched after Progress Review 4 at consultation evening. Please see MrsBrierley, Mrs Hampshire or Mrs Reynolds.

  11. Raising the Participation Age ( RPA) • All Year 10 and 11 students will have to continue in education or training in some format until their 18th Birthday. (not raising school leaving age.) • Full time education at school or college • Apprenticeship • Part time education or training if employed, self employed or volunteering for 20 hours or more per week. • Have to continue with some Maths and English based learning if not got higher grade at GCSE. (Does not have to be at GCSE level) • Nationally 92% of 16 & 17 years olds already choose to continue in education or training. ( 98% at QKS) • Why? Opportunity to develop skills and qualifications. • How? Legal requirement to participate will be on your son or daughter. Inspira will check and write if they have concerns. • School – independent careers guidance. (Citizenship, FT’s, MMO, careers events, KWE careers guidance interview, sixthform guidance interviews.)

  12. How do I revise? Post it notes or index cards of key formulas, quotes, dates, case studies around the house Condensed unit notes in a powerpoint or mind map. Use highlighters and pictures. • - Revision timetable - Bitesize chunks • varied revision • 30 – 40 min blocks + 10 min test and rest • Vary subject areas each day • Quiet + screen ban • Breaks • Rest, water, food, sleep • Leave evening before the exam for light study Use online resources, Sam learning, bitesize, my maths to test and variety £2 Support reivsion book GCSE podcasts to listen summaries. Register on VLE. Break down each subject into topics, make a topic check list for each subject: stick this up in your study area. (Revision Guides?) Mnemonics / songs letters remind you of words, can be a word or a phrase / sentence e.g. SPORT Specific, Progression, Overload, Reversibility & Tedium PRINCIPLES OF TRAINING
