Good Shepherd Ministries • Incorporated in 1983 • Serves as a ministering presence to the hungry, homeless and jobless • Currently operates a soup kitchen, food distribution program (Second Helpings), jobs programs, day shelter, evening shelter and two transitional living facilities. The agency also offers on-site medical care • FY ’04-’05 operating budget $981,500

Benefits Offered by Good Shepherd Ministries Full-Time Employee Benefits: • Medical Insurance: 70% of annual premium paid by agency, employee-only covered • Life Insurance: Offers coverage ranging from $15,000 to $25,000 • Short and Long-term Disability Income Insurance: Offered but not paid for by agency • Dental Insurance: Offered, premium paid by employee • Paid Vacation: 10-20 days per year (based upon length of employment); employees are allowed to accrue ten vacation days per year. Additional days will be forfeited if not used • Paid Holidays: 9.5 per Year • Paid Sick Leave: 12 days per year, only allowed to accrue five sick days per year. Additional time forfeited if not used. • Funeral Leave: Up to 3 days, paid using sick leave

Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. • Incorporated in 1986 • Serves victims of domestic violence living in New Hanover County • Currently operates one emergency shelter, one administrative/outreach office, and three resale shops (Vintage Values) • Identified by Good Shepherd Ministries staff as peer agency • FY ’04-’05 operating budget $738,681

  6. Employee Benefits Offered by DVSS Inc. Full-time Employee Benefits: • Medical Insurance: 100% of annual premium paid by agency for employee only • Dental Insurance: 100% of annual premium paid by agency for employee only • Life Insurance: Offers $15,000 for each employee • Supplemental Insurance Packages: Long-term and short-term disability income insurance, cancer and accident plans offered. Employee pays monthly premium • Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) Plan: Agency contributes up to $400 per year, after one year of employment • Paid Holidays: 12 per year • Paid Vacation: Minimum of 12 paid days per year for the first 24 months of employment, with 1/4 day increase over the subsequent months of employment.  Maximum of 30 days per year can be earned.  May be carried over and accrued, but not eligible for compensation for unused time after separation of employment.  • Sick Days: Same as vacation policy. Employees are allowed to accrue 720 hours. Any unused sick time is payable to employee upon separation of employment

Full-time Employee Benefits Continued: • Personal Leave: Three days per year of paid personal leave allotted to each employee.  Not allowed to accrue. • Military Duty: Ten working days will be paid by agency, and agency will pay the difference in salary if military compensation is received. • Leave for Study and other Leaves of Absence: Agency will pay for benefits premiums for four months.  Employees are allowed to use accrued vacation, sick and personal leave to pay for time but they are not allowed to accrue additional paid leave time during the absence. • Funeral Leave: Applied as personal leave • FMLA: Allowed in accordance to federal law • Employee Assistance Program: Agency pays each employee $80 per year to engage in stress-relieving activities • Unemployment Compensation • Jury Duty: Time and salary allowed, must be cleared through supervisor as soon as notice is received

Raleigh Rescue Mission • Founded in 1961 • The Mission provides physical and spiritual nourishment in the form of relief and recovery programs and services for men, women and children who are homeless and/or addicted in the Raleigh area • Operates a men’s shelter, an emergency shelter for women and children, the Life Plan Program, an adult learning center, children’s development center and provides medical care. • Current operating budget is $2,268,932

Waiting Period: 90 Days • Dental Insurance: Employee pays premium monthly, based on the following: Single Coverage: $12.18 Single +1: $22.20 Single +2 or more: $31.32. Waiting Period: 90 Days • Life Insurance: Coverage $15,000. Premium paid by RRM, no cost to employee. Waiting Period: 60 Days • Supplemental Accident and Hospital Insurance: Employee contributes to Plan monthly, premium determined on individual bases. • 401K Retirement Plan: Available to employees after one year of service • Medical and Personal Leave of Absence • Military Leave of Absence

  11. Benefits Offered by Raleigh Rescue Mission • Full time Employee Benefits Continued: • Disability Insurance: Premium paid by RRM, no cost to employee. Waiting Period: 30 Days • Paid Holidays: 8 per year • Paid Vacation: Minimum of 18 paid days per year for the first five years of service are earned. After fifth year of service, an additional vacation day a year is earned, called ‘birthday vacation’. Vacation is only allowed to be taken during January-October. • Sick Days: Employees receive 12 days of sick time per calendar year. Allowed to accumulate thirty days each year.  • Jury Duty: Salary is paid during length of service but RRM reserves the right to retain any reimbursement paid to employee • Funeral Leave: Three days of paid leave for deaths in the employee’s immediate family. Proof of attendance at the funeral may be required.

Conclusions • Good Shepherd Ministries provides higher-level employees above-average levels of compensation. • The hourly salaries offered by Good Shepherd Ministries are significantly lower than Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. as well as the standards identified by NC Center for Nonprofits. • The majority of employees who work directly with client services at Good Shepherd Ministries make less than $30,000 per year. • The rates of accrual for paid time off is less than the standards identified by NC Center for Nonprofits and less than those offered by Raleigh Rescue Mission and Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. • Good Shepherd Ministries offers no retirement plan, unlike the other organizations examined. • Good Shepherd Ministries does not provide benefits to part-time employees. • It would seem that the benefits and salaries offered by Good Shepherd Ministries should be adjusted in order to meet the changing needs of today’s workforce.
