  1. IMT 2000, CDMA 2000 1 xAnd Future Trends

  2. IMT 2000 objective. Brief Outline • IMT 2000 Technological Options • Migration Paths. • CDMA 2000 1x.

  3. MOBILE COMMUNICATION • 1946- 1960s 1980s 1990s 2000s • Appeared 1G 2G 3G • Analog Digital Digital • Multi Multi Unified Standard Standard Standard Terrestrial Terrestrial Terr. & Sat

  4. MOBILE COMMUNICATION THIRD GENERATION (3 G ) STANDARD INTERNATIONAL MOBILE TELECOM 2000. ( IMT-2000) IMT  A FUTURE STANDARD IN WHICH A SINGLE INEXPENSIVE MOBILE TERMINAL CAN TRUELY PROVIDE COMMUNICATIONS ANY TIME AND ANY WHERE

  5. IMT-2000 VISION • Common Spectrum Worldwide ( 1.8 – 2.2 GHz band ). • Multiple Radio Environments ( Cellular,, cordless, satellite) ). • Wide Range of Telecommunication Services ( Voice, Data, • Multi-media, Internet ). • Flexible Radio Bearer for Increased Spectrum Efficiency. • Data Rates up-to 2 Mbps – for Indoor Environment. • Global Seamless Roaming. • Enhanced Security Performance. • Integration of Satellite and Terrestrial Systems.

  6. Key Requirements of 3G Services • Improved system capacity. • Backward compatibility with second generation ( 2G ) systems. • Multimedia support. • High speed Packet data services. • Data Rates up-to 2 Mbps – for fixed or Indoor Environments. • Data Rates up-to 384 kbps – for pedestrian or urban Environments. • Data Rates up-to 144 kbps – for wide area mobile Environments.

  10. New Terminology in CDMA2000 Spreading Rate 1 ( 1x ). • Spreading Rate 3 ( 3x ). • Transmit Diversity. • Radio Configuration.

  11. Key Features Of CDMA2000 Different Radio Configuration (RC’s) for different radio environments. • Radio Configuration (RC’s) define Rate Set, Spreading Rate, Channel Coding ( Turbo or Convolutional ), Channel Coding rate, Modulation, Transmit Diversity for Forward or Reverse traffic channel. • RC 1 through RC 9 on the FL. ( RC 1 through RC 5 in 1x ) • RC 1 through RC 6 on the RL. ( RC1 through RC 3 in 1x )

  12. Key Features Of CDMA2000 • Variable length Walsh Codes 4 to 128 for variable data rates. • Pilot in reverse link. • Transmit Diversity. • Transmit Diversity is an optional feature that improves the performance in certain radio environments by transmitting forward signal on multiple antennas.

  13. Spreading Rate 1 and Spreading Rate 3 Spreading Rate 1 • Also called 1x. • Both forward and reverse channel use single direct sequence spread carrier with a chip rate of 1.2288 Mcps. Spreading Rate 3 • Also called 3x or MC ( Multi Carrier ). • Forward channels use three direct sequence spread carriers with a chip rate of 1.2288 Mcps. • Reverse channels use a single direct sequence spread carrier with a chip rate of 3.6864 Mcps.

  14. Advantages Of CDMA2000 1x Enhanced Capacity – 38 users/Sector/FA. • Enhanced data rates upto 153 Kbps in Release A. It can go up- to 307 Kbps in Release B. • Still higher data rates up-to 2.4 Mbps with 1x EV-DO.

  15. Commercial Systems CDMA 2000 1x Release A are available. Current Status Of CDMA2000 1x • Technical Specification for CDMA 2000 1x Release B are under finalization stages. • Currently out of total 26m 3G subscribers world over 25.5m are on CDMA 2000 1x. • Some 5-6 operators are having CDMA 2000 1x network. Major operators are Sprint, Verizon in USA and Monet Telecom in South Korea.
