  1. Ties, Slurs, Repeat Signs, D.C. al Fine, and D.C. al Coda

  2. Ties A curved line that connects 2 adjacent notes of the SAME pitch. The tone is held as though 2 notes are 1. (Sometimes, there are more than 2 notes tied together.)

  3. Slurs A curved line that connects 2 or more adjacent notes of DIFFERENT pitch. The slur indicates singing smoothly.

  4. Repeat Signs The dots placed before a double bar line means to go back to the beginning and play or sing again.

  5. Repeat Signs – Do Not Copy! This example illustrates where there is an end repeat sign but no start repeat sign. In this case you would sing or play through the eighth measure, then go back to the beginning and sing or play the entire section again.

  7. Repeat Signs Sometimes you repeat back to another repeat sign.

  8. Repeat Signs In this example, there is a start repeat sign at the beginning of measure 2. You would sing through measure 8 to the ending repeat sign… …then go back to the the first repeat sign and sing the section from measure 2 through measure 8 again.

  10. 1st and 2nd Endings The repeat sign tells you to go back to the beginning. On the repeat, skip the 1st ending and play or sing the 2nd ending.

  11. Sing to end – repeat sign Jump back to beginning – repeat sign. And sing on from the 2nd ending Sing this part again, but… Skip the 1st ending… 1st and 2nd Endings

  12. D.C. al Fine(Da Capo al Fine) …to repeat from the beginning of the music, and continue until you reach the double bar-line marked with the word fine (means ending). Fine D.C. al Fine D.C. al Fine 3 4
