Discovering Your Favorite Element: The World of Chemical Symbols

Explore the fascinating realm of chemical elements and their symbolic representation. Elements are essential building blocks of matter, and their names can be lengthy and complex. To simplify this, scientists have developed a standardized system of symbols, typically consisting of 1 to 3 letters, where the first letter is always capitalized, followed by lowercase letters. Learn more about your favorite element and its unique symbol, illustrated with an AFM image of silicon that showcases the beauty of atomic structures.

  1. Warm Up ~ Which element is your favorite?~ Why?

  2. Chemical Symbols • The element names can be very long to write over and over. • Scientist have agreed on a system of symbols to represent the elements. • Some of these symbols have 1, 2 or 3 letters. • The first letter is ALWAYScapitalized and the others (if there are any) are ALWAYS lowercase.

  3. AFM image of silicon, obtained with a qPlus force sensor with a single crystal silicon tip. Image size 3.3 nm x 3.3 nm. [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 10, 887 (2001)].
