  1. Narrative Writing: How an author tells his story

  2. What is narrative writing? • This is writing that tells a story, whether true or fictional. Narrative writing is the art of storytelling.

  3. Essential parts of a narrative: • Plot: How the story develops. Every story must have a clear beginning, middle, and end. • Purpose: The beginning, middle, and end of a story will not matter if there is not an overall purpose or focus of the story. • Audience: The author must be writing his or her story with a focus audience in mind. This focus audience will help to determine how he or she tells the story in order to best relate to their particular audience. • Voice: Narrative writers must choose a specific tone through which they tell the story. This tone is the emotion of the story. It may not necessarily be the way the author feels, but it is the way the author makes his or her readers feel.

  4. Essential parts of a narrative • Characters: The author uses his or her characters, the way he develops them and makes the reader look at them, to tell his story and to get his purpose across. The dialogue of the characters is also essential to telling the story. • Point of View: The author may use one viewpoint throughout the story so that the reader gets a very clear understanding of the story from that viewpoint or he may use multiple viewpoints in order to show the story from various perspectives. • Figurative Language: The author will use various techniques such as foreshadowing, extended metaphors, onomatopoeia, and similes. • Setting: The location in which the story takes place and the way that the author describes that location also help the author to get his purpose across through the story, and help the reader to feel as if they are a part of the story.
