  1. Science Water, Waves, and Ships

  2. Water, Waves & Ships Science Learn About: - Re-supplying at sea - Severe weather at sea - Stability in wind and waves - Wave action on boats and ships - US Coast Guard search and rescue

  3. Water, Waves & Ships Science Learn More About • Celestial Navigation • Traditional Navigation • Dead Reckoning On the Internet…

  4. Water, Waves & Ships Science A Ship’s stability is especially important while re-supplying at seas

  5. Water, Waves & Ships Science Typhoon Cobra caught Admiral Hasey’s Third Fleet unaware in December 1944.

  6. Water, Waves & Ships Science A ship’s stability is related to its buoyancy and weight. ** PAUSE Video Clip Here! • Think About This: • A large cargo ship is leaving port with its 6 holds • (the area in which a ship carries cargo) full. • It is going to make several stops. • At each port, it will unload some of its cargo leaving a hold • empty or partially empty. • What can the captain order his crew to do in order to • maintain the ship’s stability so that I will not capsize? Engage in class discussion and then restart video clip for demonstration of information required for solution(s).

  7. Water, Waves & Ships Science • Why would the ship roll? • What happens to the ship’s center • of gravity when it does roll? Now, think back to Typhoon Cobra. What do you think happened to the ships caught in the typhoon regarding their instability?

  8. Water, Waves & Ships Science Waves have several parts: • Crest - The highest part of the wave above the still-water line. • Trough- The lowest part of the wave below the still-water line. • Height- The vertical distance between the crest and the trough. • Length- The horizontal distance between each crest or each trough.

  9. Water, Waves & Ships Science • Go to websites for • Waves and tides • Ocean currents • Tides and the moon • Tornadoes • Tsunamis • Waves can cause several different • movements in ships: • Sway • Heave • Yaw Waves can affect the navigation of a ship!

  10. Water, Waves & Ships Science How would adding water to the boat’s hull, provide additional stability? * Brainstorm & Research: What Kinds of boat designs would Provide the most stability? Why?

  11. Water, Waves & Ships Science The effects of water and wave action are important elements for navigating a ship and maintaining its stability.
