  1. Artwork • The name of this art work is called baroque art it is often thought as a period of artistic style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance and music. The style began in Rome, Italy and spread to most of Europe. • This piece shows mother Mary and baby Jesus . Also relating to or denoting a style of European architecture, music, and art of the 17th and 18th centuries that followed mannerism and is characterized by ornate detail. In architecture the period is exemplified by the palace of Versailles and by the work of Bernini in Italy. Major composers include Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel; Caravaggio and Rubens are important baroque artists. • The term Baroque (derived from the Portuguese 'barocco' meaning, 'irregular pearl or stone') describes a fairly complex idiom, originating in Rome, which flowered during the period c.1590-1720, and which embraced painting, and sculpture as well as architecture. After the idealism of the Renaissance (c.1400-1530), and the slightly 'forced' nature of Mannerism (c.1530-1600), Baroque art above all reflected the religious tensions of the age - notably the desire of the Catholic Church in Rome (as annunciated at the Council of Trent, 1545-63) to reassert itself in the wake of the Protestant Reformation. Thus it is almost synonymous with Catholic Counter-Reformation Art of the period.

  3. MOTHER [MARY] AND BABY [JESUS]

  4. ANALYSIS OF ARTWORK • For centuries children were not a priority for the majority of the parents – physical difficulties of survival and the hysterical appeal to God for help were the first tasks to be addressed. Children were perceived as a strange hybrid between a forced luxury and a burdensome necessity of life. In modern times mothers still blinded by poverty and excited by rivalry with men, were ready to work instead of staying home with their children. Today many women prefer to pay other people to look after their children than to sacrifice their jobs, careers, and social success. This is a nice piece of artwork causeit shows the element of art for example: The baby has curly hair and it looks smooth cause he is a baby, Also the baby hair is a bright brown color and the mum’s hair is black showing the difference in their values.

  5. INTERPRETATION OF THE ARTWORK • This artwork shows a mother with her child it shows love, this show that the mother loves the child she watches him sleep and she tends to be praying for him this shows peace between her and her baby and god she is praying to. • Also the artist most be successful because this art work has a strong message to the individuals in our society cause shows mother (Mary) and baby (Jesus) in a peaceful state cause the baby is sleeping and the mum is praying for the baby. • Also it shows the amount of love a mother has towards her child to make sure her baby is sleeping peacefully so she watches the baby sleep, this should show people what their mothers had to do for them for them to get to the stage they are in life.

  6. EVALUATION OF THE ARTWORK • This is a nice artwork cause it shows us a particular stage in life in which we all passed as babies, also it shows peace and unity between us and our parents. • I like this Artwork because it is easy to recognize the subject because of the realistic quality of the art. And I will always remember that this is Mary and her little baby Jesus, also because I am a Christian and the bible teaches us that the baby Jesus grew up and became the Saviour of the world because he died for our sins that is why every December on 25thchristians celebrate the birth of Jesus. • The artist Ruben’s did a good job in this painting cause it takes us back to the birth of Jesus and reminds us of what he did for us for us to be alive today
