  2. What is Apprenticeship?Apprenticeship is a post-secondary educational program the same as University or College. The difference is 80% of time spend in apprenticeship is on-the-job. The concept is “paid to work, paid to learn, the more you learn, the more you earn”. • Who are we? • We are a Branch of the Provincial government • Branch – Apprenticeship & Occupational Certification • Dept. – Post Secondary Education, Training & Labour

  3. How do I become an Apprentice • Prerequisites: - Provide proof of grade 12 or equivalent - Working Full time for an employer - Work under a certified Journeyperson - Pay the registration fee ($25.00)

  4. Upon Registration • Receive an Apprenticeship Progress Record Book • Photo ID Card • Be assigned an Apprenticeship Counselor • Challenge our Essential Skills Assessment exam

  5. Practical Training • Work approx: 1500 – 1800 hours • Be scheduled to attend block training • Your counselor will monitor your practical and theory progress

  6. Block Training • Must pass the Essential Skills Assessment (ESA) exam to attend Block training • Duration varies from 2 – 10 weeks • Most are 6 – 8 wks • Tuition is $85.00 per week (6 wks =$510.00) • Most employers lay apprentices off – Employment Insurance (EI) • If EI eligible, you can apply for Training Skills Development grants (TSD)

  7. TSD Grants • Text books are fully funded • Grants for: • Travel • Room & Board • Day care

  8. Block Training • Attendance policy • Block exam (70%) • $1000.00 Federal grant (Red Seal trades only) for passing each block 1 & block 2 • Apply for the tuition rebate • Return to work (Process continues for 3 to 5 years)

  9. Completion Requirements • Master the practical skills - Progress Record Book • Pass all block exams and the certification exam • Required hours • Bricklayer = 5400 hrs • Carpenter = 7200 hrs • Construction Electrician = 9000 hrs

  10. Outcomes • Diploma of Apprenticeship • Certificate of Qualification • Interprovincial Standard (Red Seal) • Apply for the Federal grant - $2000.00

Overview / Summary • - Find employment in one of our occupations • - Register into an apprenticeship agreement • - Pass the Essential Skills Assessment Exam • - Work approx: 1800 hrs • - Attend school and pass the Block 1 exam • - Work another 1800 & pass the Block 2 etc. • - Pass the final exam • - Complete your Apprenticeship • - Receive your Certificate of Qualification as a Journeyperson

  19. High School Pre-apprentice Program • Students can now register as a pre-apprentice through 3 different avenues: • Coop/career exploration programs • Summer Employment • NB Teen Apprenticeship Program • Receive a Progress Record Book • ID Card

High School Credits 3 ways were established to receive credits towards an Apprenticeship 1) Hours credit for high school trades courses – 80 hrs per course with a mark 70% or higher - any course can be applied to any trade Ex: Automotive course – credit towards Carpentry Machinist course – credit toward Electrical Note: Hours credited from high school trade courses are available for six (6) years after graduation Effective date – July, 2010

  21. 2) Credit of Hours for work experience - Applies to Coop/Career Exploration students on work terms - Summer employment - NB Teen Apprenticeship Program (NBTAP) Note: A student can receive credits for any or all 3 programs

  22. 3) Challenge our Essential Skills Assessment Exam (ESA) - Applies to any high school student who registers as a pre-apprentice -This assessment will be administered just prior to graduation

  23. How to register as a pre-apprentice Coop work term – through your district rep. Summer employment – call the nearest apprenticeship office NB Teen Apprenticeship Program – NBTAP rep looks after it. NO FEE

  24. Benefits • Shorten the time it takes to complete an apprenticeship program • Gain valuable and relevant workplace skills/more marketable to employers. • Have those skills documented in a format employers recognize.

Pre-apprenticeship Apprenticeship Pre-employment • Students can register as pre-apprentices through: • Coop/career exploration • Summer employment • NB Teen Apprenticeship Program Direct to work - Obtain Employment Complete Pre-Employment Course Register as an Apprentice ESA Exam Transcription of Marks Pre-Apprentice PR Book Block 1 Exam ESA Exam Receive and ID Card and Progress Record Book. Complete On-the-Job Hours Obtain Employment Attend Block Training Receive credit for trade courses Register as an Apprentice Block 1 Exam Receive credit for practical work hours Transcript of marks, Pre- apprentice PR Book Return to work Receive credit for practical work experience Complete On-the-Job Hours Attend Block Training Attend Block Training ESA Exam Block 2 Exam Process Repeats for Blocks 3-5 Return to work High School Graduation Attend Block Training Apprenticeship Pre-employment Cert. Exam Diploma of Apprenticeship & Certificate of Qualification
