  1. ClimateAim: What makes climate different from weather? Describe the climate of Great Neck (think about the weather throughout the year and what affects it)

  2. Temperate: Humid,Cool winters, warm summers, moderate temperature variations.

  3. Tropical: Hot & Humid

  4. Polar: Cold and Dry

  5. Desert: Dry, moderate temp variation

  6. Think about some factors that affect the climate of an area (why is it not hot all year long in New York?)

  7. Latitude: As distance from the equator increases the temp decreases (warm at the equators, cold at the poles)

  8. Graph the relationship between Latitude and Temperature.

  9. Altitude/Elevation: High altitude have cool climates (air rises, expands and cools) Mountains and plateaus

  10. Graph the relationship between Altitude/Elevation and temperature

  11. MOUNTAIN RANGES: Air is forced (Orographic lifting) up on the windward side of a mountain where it is wet, leeward side is dry

  12. Which City is located on the leeward side?

  13. Oceans and large bodies of water: Specific heat of water causes areas near them to have cool summers and warm winters(small temp range). Inland have cooler winters and warmer summers

  14. Temperature Range Temperature Months Distance to body of water

  15. Ocean Currents: Stream of water that circulates through the ocean basin

  16. What current was Marlin looking for?

  17. Which current keeps the East coast of the United States relatively warm?Which current keeps the west coast relatively cool?Check your ESRT?

  18. Is the Peru current cool or warm? Where does it originate from?Is the Brazil current cool or warm? Where does it originate from?

  19. Which side of South America has cooler yearly average temperatures

  20. On average, which location has a cooler average yearly temperature A or B. Why? A B

  21. Which City would have a cooler winter? Which would have a warmer summer? Why A. B.

  22. Which way does all weather patterns generally move?

  23. Which TWO factors have the greatest influence on climate?

  24. Why do rainforests get so much rain?

  25. Why are deserts so dry?

  26. Planetary Winds: Prevailing winds and rising air currents

  27. Which City would have a cooler winter? Which would have a warmer summer? Why A. B.

  28. Which city has a bigger RANGE of temperatures?

  29. Types of climates

  30. Temperate: Cool winters, warm summers, humid, moderate temperature variations.

  31. Tropical: Hot, Humid little temperature variation

  32. Polar: Cold and Dry

  33. Desert: Hot, Dry, moderate temp variation

  34. Climate can be broken down into smaller sub-climatesClimate depends on temp and moisture. Temp is easy it has to do with elevation, latitude etc. Moisture is more complicated.Based on wind and bodies of water

  35. To be classified as humid or arid, it is based on the ratio between the total amount of precipitation and the total annual potential for evaporation and transpiration.P/E

  36. The bigger the number, the more moisture there is Arid: Dry, P/E of 0.4 or lessSemi Arid: Not as dry as Arid with a P/E of 0.4-0.8Sub Humid: Moist with a P/E of 0.8-1.2Humid: Very moist, P/E of 1.2 or greater

  37. D A C B

  38. With over 173 inches so far in March, the snow-banks are getting HUGE

  40. How does water enter the atmosphere? Where is most of it coming from?

  41. Please DON’T sing the song
