Hispanics in Utah • Disproportionately affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. • Disproportionately affected by STD infections. • Particularly at risk of HIV & STD infections because of its high teen pregnancy rate. • The Latino community with HIV/AIDS is diverse with Mexicans making up the largest share of those with HIV/AIDS.

  15. We can’t ignore… • Current policies and programs must meet the demands of obvious demographic changes. • Current research must consider the socio-economic and immigrant status of Latinos to develop culturally and linguistically appropriate EBIs.

  16. Utah’s Local Response Identified two areas identified for capacity building assistance for 2008: • Grantees and partners. • The Utah Health Department itself.

  17. Local Response - Grantees • Improve the capacity of CBOs to: • strengthen and sustain their organizational infrastructures. • adapt, tailor, implement and evaluate the implementation and performance of their HIV prevention interventions.

  18. Local Response - Grantees • Improve overall capacity of CBOs through trainings such as: • DEBI trainings specific to their contracted services, • Cultural Competency and Diversity trainings, • Facilitation techniques, • Grant writing workshops .

  19. Local Response - Grantees • Improve capacity to implement strategies for program expansion, collaboration, testing, alternative prevention methods, etc.

  20. Local Response - UDOH • Redesigned the HIV Prevention Program’s capacity to: • train, adapt, tailor, implement HIV prevention interventions in-house. • Improved techniques and tools for the evaluation of: • Grantees’ programs and performance • Appropriate EBI implementation and adaptation

  21. Local Response - UDOH • Streamlined our collaboration and coordination efforts: The HIV, STD & Hep. C. Prevention Program • Effective PEMS implementation statewide.

  22. Utah Latino AIDS Institute A collaboration among: • Utah Department of Health, and • JSI Research and Training Institute • UDOH Center for Multicultural Health – Utah’s Office of Minority Health

  23. Utah Latino AIDS Institute Brought together CBA Providers from 4 CDC Focus Areas Utah’s HIV Prevention Grantees Partners in HIV/AIDS Prevention community: Utah, Wyoming and Colorado

  24. Utah Latino AIDS Institute • 30 different workshops/topics to choose from: • Budgeting Basics for Non-Financial Executives • Monitoring and Evaluating Interventions • Social Marketing Campaigns

  25. Utah Latino AIDS Institute Some areas/topics chosen: Creating Strength-based, High-Performing Teams Building Coalitions and Conflict Resolution Group Facilitation Monitoring & Evaluating Interventions Community Leadership Focus Groups Participant Driven Round Tables

  26. Utah Latino AIDS Institute Participants gained: Better understanding of concepts of CBA. Received direct TA in the 4 CDC Focus Areas. Practical knowledge and skills. Awareness of resources available to them to satisfy current and future TA needs.

  27. Utah Latino AIDS Institute An effective strategy to promote and sustain health prevention programs. Successful and cost effective method to provide technical and capacity building assistance.
