  2. Community Description • Established: • April 11, 1846 & Named after John B. Denton (Odom, 2001) • Covers 911 Square Miles in North Central Texas • Surrounded by 6 Counties: • Collin, Tarrant, Cooke, Wise, Dallas, & Grayson

  3. Community Description Continued • Population Total: 686,406 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011)

  4. Gatekeeper Interviews • Dr. Bing Burton of Denton County Health Department • Worked for health depart. for over 20 years • Pressing Health Issue: “Obesity was the number one health concern for Denton County. As a state and a nation obesity is the biggest issue that Denton faces. It impacts the county more than any communicable disease”. ( B.Burton, personal communication, 2012) • Dr. Joshua Bernstein (CHES) • Instructor at TWU • Lives, Works, and Volunteers in Denton County • Pressing Health Issue: Minorities in Denton (J. Berstein, personal communication, 2012).

Epidemiological, Behavioral, & Environmental Assessment • Obesity can be correlated to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes: • 1/3 Adults in U.S. are Obese • Denton County 63.9% Adults are overweight/obese (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012a) • 1/3 Adults high blood pressure(CDC, 2012b) • Cardiovascular Disease: 600,000 die a year (CDC, 2012b) • Denton County 4.6% Adults have CVD • 25.8 million living with Diabetes (CDC, 2011) • Denton County 7.8% Adults have Diabetes • State of Texas, African American obesity rate 958.9 per 100,000 compared to whites at 175.8 per 100,000

Genetic Factors • Genes have been shown to manipulate factors that can influence certain behaviors like metabolism (tendency for the body to store fat, or not use the fat for fuel) , or the feeling of excessive hunger (CDC, 2012c). • People with family history 2 to3 times at higher risk to become obese • LEP Gene (helps regulate appetite and metabolism) • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), CushingsSydrome, or Thyroid Hormone Deficiency all affect metabolism (National Heart Lung Blood Institute, 2012)

  7. Educational & Ecological Assessment • Predisposing Factors: • Genetics • (LEP Gene, metabolism defects) • Hereditary(previous family history) • Lack of education & knowledge • Reinforcing Factors: • Sedentary lifestyle • Friends/Families/Co Workers Social Outings (tend to go out to eat)

Education & Ecological Assessment Continued • Enabling Factors: • Convenience, Cost Effective & Easy Assess to Fast Food Restaurants • 317 Fast Food Restaurants in Denton & 385 full service restaurants (Find the Data,2012) • Portion Control • Lack of Resources within the Community (biking, jogging, & walking trails) • Social Marketing Commercials (foods high in sugar, fat, & calorie content is shown)

  9. Instrumentation and Data Collection • Wilkes County Community Health Council’s 2009 Community Health Survey • Anonymity • 18-35 year old within in Denton County around Golden Triangle Mall & TWU • 20 women were surveyed

Theory/ Model SOCIAL COGNITIVE THEORY • Interpersonal theory that provides an understanding of how the social environment influences behavior (Doyle et al., 2010). • Suggests that a person’s beliefs about an outcome of a behavior and confidence in his or her ability to perform it will influence the frequency of the behavior • If women in the community lack the resources they need to exercise such as gyms, and parks they will be less likely to exercise

Community Assets & Resources • Denton Healthy Community Coalition • The Community Advisory Committee • “Take the First Step” 5K/1 mile walk/run (Denton County Health Department, 2012) • WIC • TWU & UNT (have gyms, counselors, and health professors available to students) • City of Denton Heart Healthy Dining Guide

Individuals & Organizations • National Obesity Foundation (NOF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Americans lose weight • Dr. Bing Burton of the Denton County Health Department in the gatekeeper interview • Amber Haig of the Denton County Health Education Department. • She is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). She stated that “self image and mental quality of life are highly linked to the obesity and overweight rates in Denton County” (A. Haig, personal communication, 2012).
