  1. Moving UP Workshop Second Grade

  2. Math – By September • Single digit Addition up to 5 • Number recognition up to 1000 • Subtracting numbers from 10 • Using manipulatives to subtract/add larger numbers • Clock – understand the hour and minute hands, tell time to the hour • Measurement – being able to measure using nonstandard units of measurement • Money – recognizing the value of coins • Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s • Pattern – can recognize and continue patterns

  3. Math – In the upcoming year • Double digit addition up to 1000 with and without regrouping • Knowledge of place value up to 10,000 • Subtracting numbers up to 1000 with and without regrouping • Clock –telling time to the half hour and quarter hour • Reading and solving bar models. • Reading and solving word problems • Measurement – using standard units of measurement (mass, volume, length) • Money – addition and subtraction using coins and dollars • Develop and understand multiplication and division • Master multiplying by 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s • Master dividing by 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s (with or without manipulatives) • Understanding fractions as a part of a whole

  4. Writing – By September • How to write multiple paged stories with pictures and words in multiple genres. • Using capitals only when necessary • To write first grade level sight words. • To stretch out words in writing, hearing beginning, end, and some middle sounds.

  5. Writing – In The Upcoming Year • How to write and type multiple paged stories with pictures and words in the genres of: personal narrative, realistic fiction, poetry, all-about informational texts, and twisted fairy tales. • To write second grade level sight words. • To stretch out words in writing, hearing beginning, end, and most middle sounds. • To edit and revise their own writing.

  6. Reading – By September • Is reading independently at a Fountas and Pinnell level H or above. • Is able to read independently for 10-15 minutes. • Recognize approximately 100 sight words • How to decode words using a variety of reading strategies • How to read with fluency and expression • Recognize characteristics of different genres of reading including fiction and non-fiction

  7. Reading – In the Upcoming Year • Is reading independently at a Fountas and Pinnell level L or above. • Recognize approximately 150 sight words. • Is able to read independently for 20-30 minutes. • Independently choosing and reading books in a variety of genres. • Discuss literature with teacher and peers.

  8. Word Study – By September • Short vowel sounds and spelling pattern • Digraphs and Blends • Segmenting and Blending sounds into phonemes • Long Vowel sounds and spelling patterns

  9. Word Study – In the Upcoming Year • Additional long vowel spelling patterns • Introductory understanding of the main parts of speech • R controlled vowels • Using Y as a vowel and as a consonant

  10. Science – By September • How to weed and plant a garden plot • How to conduct and record observations of various objects • How to compare life cycles of plants and insects • How to group foods into healthy snacks and balanced meals using the food pyramid • How to keep fit and healthy through hygiene and exercise • A beginning understanding of the scientific method

  11. Science – In the Upcoming Year • How to differentiate between living, non-living, and once living things • Identify characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases • Gain a clear understanding of the scientific method • Carry out an experiment using the scientific method • How to compare ways we get sick and ways to prevent getting sick • Identify energy as light, sound, and motion • Differentiate between four major habitats

  12. Social Studies – By September • Identifying key members and places of the school and neighborhood community • Conduct an interview to gain information about a person • Use literature to learn about the civil rights movement and important African America Heroes • Read and create maps with symbols

  13. Social Studies – In the Upcoming Year • Identify classroom community and 3 types of communities: city, town, suburb • Become more connected with their own culture • Use literature to learn about famous African Americans and Famous American Woman and Famous Inventors • Identifying size relations of a planet, continent, country, state, and town • Expand further into map skills and knowledge • Differentiate between biographies and autobiographies • Compare and contrast wants and needs
