  2. Your energy usage… • Make a list of everything that you have done today that involved using energy of any sort. (From when you first awoke until now.) • Next to each of these tasks, write down from where you think the energy originated.

  3. RENEWABLE OR NONRENEWABLE? Now mark down on your paper which of these energy origins would be regarded as renewable and which would be nonrenewable resources.

  5. NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

COAL 86% • Coal – nonrenewable fossil fuel. • Coal is burned to produce heat, which converts water into high-pressure steam. • The steam turns the blades of a turbine that is connected to a generator. • The generator spins and converts mechanical energy to electricity. • First Energy -- YouTube -- Coal to Electricity Generation

  7. HOW IS COAL MADE ???

  8. NATURAL GAS 2% • Natural gas – nonrenewable fossil fuel • Can either be burned to produce steam or to produce hot combustion gas that passes through the turbine blades. • Approximately 2 percent of the electricity in Ohio is produced using natural gas and other gases.

  9. PETROLEUM 1% • Petroleum – nonrenewable fossil fuel • Burned to create steam to turn the turbine blades. • The most common form of petroleum used to make electricity is fuel oil, a type of oil that is refined from crude oil. • Petroleum generates approximately 1 % of Ohio electricity.

  12. COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

NUCLEAR 10% • Nuclear power involves a process called fission in which the atoms of the element uranium split • The splitting of atoms releases heat to turn water into steam and rotate the turbine blades. • Nuclear power is nonrenewable and is used to generate about 10 percent of Ohio electricity. • How Nuclear Energy is Generated -- eHow

  14. NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

  15. HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

  16. RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

HYDROPOWER 1% • In hydropower generation, flowing water is used to spin the turbine connected to the generator. • Hydropower plants can use the current from a river or falling water that has accumulated in a dam to create the force needed to turn the turbine blades. • Hydropower and the other renewable resources described below currently account for about 1 percent of electric generation in Ohio.

  24. BIOMASS • Biomass energy resources include wood, garbage, and crop waste such as corn and wheat that can be burned to heat water and create steam to turn the turbine blades.
