  2. I have not yet been to Jamaica, I have been to the Caribbean though. I loved it and I can't wait to return. The Jamaican culture seems very unique to the country. The artwork I have stumbled upon from Jamaica is absolutely beautiful.. It's so very unique and being an artist myself, I really admire the hard work they put into their pieces. Music, singing and dancing also seem to be huge parts of the culture. The country appears to be very lively and free spirited which I love.

  4. Bob Marley, one of Jamaica's most famous heroes, was born in 1945. He spent his early years in a dysfunctional family and was known as Tuff Gong. Even though times were tough, Bob's music career was supported by those around him and embraced. In the 1960's, Ska became a prevalent music famous to Jamaica. This is when Bob Marley began to stand out, in his early teens. His music swept the nation as he sang catchy beats and tunes about racism and other deep issues the country faced. Soon enough, he was seen as the voice of Jamaica. He also was accredited for the worldwide spread of reggae music. He practiced Rastafarian ways and also was a iconic member of the religion. Marley and his band, The Wailers, put Jamaican music on the map. He provided hope and happiness through his melodies for the country. Regardless of his death at the early age of 37, Marley's legacy still exists world wide today.

Observations continued… • Helping Out • Are you expected to clean your own clothes? • Should you help with house cleaning? • Are you expected to help the younger children? • Eating Etiquette • Where do you sit? • When is it okay to start eating? • Should you talk during a meal? • Should you praise food? • Do you pray before eating?

Observations continued… • Public & Private • What is the meaning of a closed door? • Are you not allowed in some areas of the house? • What are your responsibilities when guests are over? • Dress Etiquette • What dress is appropriate in the morning before you get ready for the day? • Can you wear shoes in the house? • What occasions should you dress formally for?

  13. Lessons continued… • 3. INSIGHT… • You may have to do some adjusting after the trip ends. • You will also have to adjust when you get there. • 2. According to the cycle of adjustment, our short stay will include: • -Limited exposure to country & culture • -Excitement and enthusiasm • -Everything is exotic & quaint • -Generally a positive attitude • -Little is expected of you • This is known as the Honeymoon stage.

Your conscious competence is telling you to adjust your behavior accordingly to situations in this new country. “You are in the process of replacing old instincts with new ones.” You may however experience unconscious competence when you no longer think about what you’re doing in order to do the right thing. This culturally appropriate behavior will now be second nature to you.

  15. Any concerns? • Are we going to be safe? • Are we going to be noticed easily • by the locals? • Will the natives be against our visit? • Will we have to endure remarks • from the locals about our presence? • Or will they be welcoming and • happy to have us in their presence?

  16. In the school Will the children be excited to have us in their classroom? Will the teacher be warm and welcoming? Will we learn techniques we can use in our own classrooms back in America? Will the children be able to teach me things?
