  7. Course Details This course does not have a textbook, but we do use an e-book for Paraprofessionals in the Classroom. You can download each week’s chapters in the Doc Sharing section of the class. Software Requirements: • AOL Instant Messenger (optional): If you are not an AIM Member you can download the free service by visiting the following site: http://www.aim.aol.com/ • Microsoft Word (REQUIRED for projects) • Adobe Acrobat Reader (available as a free download at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html • QuickTime (available as a free download at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ )

EP101 Course Outcomes By the end of this course, you will be able to meet the following course outcomes: • EP101-1: Identify elements of effective classroom management including instruction and classroom environment • EP101-2: Describe the role of the educational paraprofessional in the classroom • EP101-3: Develop a personal educational philosophy of classroom management • EP101-4: Discussa classroom management plan Additionally, the following GEL outcomes are assessed in this course: • GEL-1.1:  Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard American English • GEL 8.2: Use principles of sound reasoning

Extenuating Circumstances If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from completing projects or participating in the class, please contact me as soon as possible as I do worry about my students. Be sure to review the grading rubrics in your syllabus. Please be proactive and plan your time accordingly!

  13. Plagiarism Policy Kaplan University considers academic honesty to be one of its highest values. Students are expected to be the sole authors of their work. Use of another person’s work or ideas must be accompanied by specific citations and references. Though not a comprehensive or exhaustive list, the syllabus provides some examples of dishonesty or unethical and unprofessional behavior. Please review this policy!!!! When in doubt, please cite your resources.

Unit 1 Assignments • Review Content under “Course Home” • Complete the Readings (Chapter 1 “What is a Paraprofessional?” Study Guide for Ch. 1, “Classroom Management Overview” presentation) • Complete the Learning Activities (“What is Classroom Management?” presentation, video on “Description of the Job of Teacher Assistant,” unit summary) • Post your Introduction and read/respond to your classmates • Post your response to the Discussion Question and read/respond to your classmates • Complete the Graded Reviews (there are two!) • Attend Seminar OR complete Option #2 • ALL DUE BY TUESDAY NIGHT (MIDNIGHT)

Classroom/Library Assistance Basic Skills Support, listen to children read Gifted/Talented Enrichment In-school suspension Monitor Computer Lab Technician/operate audiovisual equipment Bus Aide, playground/cafeteria monitor Tutors/provide reinforcement Provide clerical support for teachers, grade papers, etc. Specialize in subject areas (math, science, etc.) Operate technical equipment Work with special needs/special education students Support second language learners/provide ESL (English as a Second Language) support Support occupational/physical therapy • Go by many names in the schools: • Paraeducator • Teacher Aide • Instructional Assistant • Aide • Teaching Assistant • Paratherapist • Transition Trainer

  17. Seminar Questions • After completing the unit 1 readings/video, name 3 new things you’ve learned about the role/responsibilities of a paraprofessional? What have you learned about the field? • Visit the National Resource Center for Paraprofessionals website at www.nrcpara.org and browse through the pages. Discuss three things you learned about paras or the website. Be sure to add this website to your favorites as it has a wealth of resources for paraprofessionals.
