  2. Genre for my film • Undoubtedly choosing the genre for my film is a key issue early in the planning of my future film. • I think that at this early stage it is important for me to indicate why certain genres are appealing to me and the decisions I will make with regards to genre.

  3. Ultimately one of my heaviest influences is choosing a genre is my genre film research. (See genre film document). • That research showed me that the most popular genres and their key features. However my study into the IMDB top ten movies list and their respective genres portrayed the message that (stereotypically speaking) the most popular films are often from the crime and drama genre. And that the most successful films are often a hybrid of one or two genres.

  4. Unquestionably one cannot ignore the fact that my personal taste in film genre will to some extent have an impact on my chosen genre to explore. However I am aware that I cannot be biased or single minded in this decision. My favourite film genres are: • Action • Sci-Fi • Adventure • Drama • Comedy

  5. Key: Lighter the shade of blue the less appealing the genre. Vice Versa. Action Drama Documentary Rom- Com Western Potential Genres War Comedy Sci- Fi Historical Mystery

Most appealing genres. • After thinking about the most appealing genres it becomes apparent that for me they are: • -Action • -Drama • -Mystery • -Documentary All of these genres have their pro’s and cons. Over the next few slides I will try to outline which genre(s) I feel will be best suited for my Film. For information on these genres please look at initial genre research document.

  7. Action • The action genre iscertainly a genre which has someappeal to me. I like the ideaof a action sequencebeingincluded in my film. However I amconscious to not makemy film 5 minutes worth of fightingwith no storyline. And afterreflection I believethat I am more interested in creating a film with a meaning and a storyline, thatmayinclude an action sequence. Therefore I amcertainlyconsidering to applysome aspects of the action genre in my film, but itwill not be the main genre of my film.

  8. Drama • The drama genre is the genre thatismostappealing to me as a potential genre. As highlighted in the previousslide I amkeen to create a film thatisdramadrivenwith an interestingstoryline. I amalsoveryattracted to the idea of the film being a social commentaryencorporatingideas of existentialism; whichwould fit perfectlyinto the drama genre.

  9. Mystery • The mystery genre isalso an area that I amconsidering to have some impact on my film. I have decidedthatmy film won’tbeheavilyinfluenced by the mystery genre partly due to the length restrictions to our film, as the 5 minute (approx) lengthwould not (in my opinion) beenough time to buildsignicant suspense and a sense of mystery.

  10. Documentary • The documentary genre in my opinion is a underrated and underexploited film genre. I amkeen to use the documentary genre in my film. I affirmthat if I do decide (in the next few weeks) to pursue the social commentarydrama film idea, that the documentary genre wouldsupplement the ideaperfectly.

  11. Conclusion • After concluding my research the film genre(s) that my film will fit into will be a combination of • - Documentary/ social commentary • - Action • - Drama Predominantly my film will fall into the documentary/ social commentary genre. However I am keen to incorporate an action scene perhaps as the climax to my film. Moreover I am also going to include many dramatic genre elements.

Next step • I firmly believe that at this stage the next step in my preparation for my film should be a number of film studies into a variety of films that fall into the genres I have chosen. • This will enable me to extract the positives and recognise some potential negatives from the prospective films which will give me greater knowledge and perspective when it comes to deciding on a storyline and constructing my film. Films to research: • Fight Club (1999, USA) • La Haine (1995, France) • In my research of these films I will include: • Basic facts about the film • Storyline/ plot synopsis • Why I am researching that particular film/why is the research useful. • A Trailer analysis • What I have learned from the research/ what I will apply to my film.
