  1. Vehicle Infrastructure Integration:The State Perspective June 3, 2007 Gregory D. Krueger, P.E. Michigan Department of Transportation

  2. The Driving Forces at a State DOT • 43,000 People Die Every Year on Our Roadways • Leading Cause of Death Between Ages 4 – 33 • 50% of the Deaths Occur from Intersection Collision and Leaving the Roadway • Traffic Crashes Cost the Economy $230B/Yr • Traffic Congestion Costs Americans $63B/Yr • Congestion Wastes Billions of Gallons of Fuel

  3. Every DOT’s Mission • Reduce and Eliminate Crashes • Address Congestion • Recurrent vs. non-Recurrent • Manage / Maintain vs. Build-Out • Economic Competitiveness and Development • National • International

  4. Efficient and Effective Operations and ITS • Develop and sustain a program at MDOT to improve transportation system safety and operational performance using existing and innovative Intelligent Transportation Systems technologies for economic benefit and improved quality of life.

  5. Illustrative Supply Chain Network

  6. Michigan Automotive R&D Facilities • 300+ Facilities • $10.8 Billion spent in-state on automotive -related R&D (2007 - MEDC)

  7. VII Collaboration

  8. MDOT VII Strategy • Support Industry in their development of VII programs and technologies to facilitate job creation and growth in Michigan • MDOT Test Beds in Southeast Michigan • Auburn Hills • Southfield • Farmington Hills / Novi • Data Use Analysis and Processing (DUAP) • Engaging new partners • Connected Vehicle Proving Center (CVPC) • Parking Karma

  9. DUAP Purpose • Evaluate the uses and benefits of VII-related data in supporting MDOT • Responding to safety concerns • Managing traffic • Managing transportation assets • Support other ongoing VII activities • Technical development • Economic growth

  10. DUAP Objectives • Identify MDOT uses for VII data • Develop algorithms to analyze and process VII data • Develop prototype applications for processed data for MDOT • Evaluate impacts of VII data and algorithms in the DOT

  11. MDOT Traffic Engineers Information Technology Planning Michigan State University University of Michigan MNDOT CALTRANS We’re Not Alone – DUAP Steering Committee • MTC • FDOT & FTE • NY State DOT • US DOT • Transport Wales • Ministry of Transportation Ontario • Netherlands • Swedish National Road Agency (Vagverket & Vinnova) • RCOC

  12. Connected Vehicle Proving Center Internet Backhaul Network Operations Center WiFi Hot Spot Satellite Cellular (WAN) WiFi Vehicle to Roadside Traffic Management Center Connected Vehicle Vehicle and Road Data Vehicle-to-Vehicle Test Labs DSRC Tolling Test Track/Proving Grounds

  13. CVPC Concept • MEDC - $6M+ seed funding (including partner match) • Connect Partners Not Involved • Developmental In-Vehicle Components (suppliers) • Third Party Telematics Components) • Communications Component Developers • In Vehicle • Roadside • Backhaul • Network Developers • Data Users / Processors • Goal – Develop New Ideas, Components and Partners • Foster Growth in VII From Outside

  14. Collaboration is Necessary • 250,000 Roadside Units • Lots of unknowns! • Deployment Cost • Permitting • Power • Communications • Maintenance • Operations • Legal / Liability • Telecommunications industry experts • 16-18 Million Vehicles sold per year in the US

  15. Next Steps for MDOT • Continue with DUAP as our primary focus • Support US DOT Proof of Concept efforts • Novi / Farmington Hills • VII-C • Share information with our partners • www.michigan.gov/mdotvii
