TECHFest 2014 Social Technology For The Classroom. Dustin Fowler
7 Habits of Teachers who teach with Technology. • http://www.teachthought.com/technology/7-habits-of-highly-effective-teachers-who-effectively-use-technology/
Edmodo • Looks like mainstream social website • Great for “centering” your instruction (Hub) • Great for “flipped” classroom • Also great for PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION!!!!!! • www.edmodo.com
Edmodo Group Pages • You can follow group pages based on topics that interest you professionally, like subject matter, classes you teach, etc. • So many ideas will cross your timeline- can’t possibly read them all. • Networking- ask and you will receive- literally. • Newsela, Remind101, Scoop.it, 7 habits of tech teachers.
YouTube.com • Hey, so we can watch YouTube videos in class!!!
YouTube.com • Make a profile, subscribe to scholastic channels like TED Talks, HipHughes, Crash Course, and Khan Academy. • There is SO much available for viewing and linking to edmodo/schoolfusion. Students need to know how YouTube can be used for gaining knowledge. • Differentiated instruction.
Downloading YouTube Videos • Many ways, my favorite browser is… • http://keep-tube.com/ • Can be accessed DURING SCHOOL!! • Must use Internet Explorer in order for it to work at school. • At home, I downloaded and use VDownloader.
Remind101 We just love keeping parents in the loop.
Remind101 • We like informing parents of all sorts of things that help us do our job- but lets face it, we really don’t want to talk to parents. • https://www.remind101.com/
Weebly.com • http://www.weebly.com/weebly/userHome.php • Building, Creating, Showcasing progress and learning. • Important because… • Promotes critical thinking through professional discussion. • Encourages creativity and student ownership
Zipgrade • Last year, I introduced Gradecam. • This year, Zipgrade. It’s like Gradecam, except substantially cheaper. • Takes pictures of MC Tests and automatically grades them with accuracy. • http://www.zipgrade.com/
NewsELA and Scoop.it • Want a cool way to get relevant material for your students to read? EASY!!! • https://www.newsela.com/ • http://www.scoop.it/ • Both of these contain tons of nonfiction, current events related stuff for students to read. Newsela actually has setting to let you adjust the Lexile levels to match the levels of your students.
SCREENCAST!!! • Want to be the next John Greene? There’s no shortage of screen capture software out there! • BlueBerry is my favorite! http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/bbflashback/home.aspx • There are browser versions as well! • Explain Everything- Screen capture for your iPad (not iPhone). • Find what works for you.
How is Screencasting helpful? • Student presentations • Teacher Absences • Flipped Classroom or additional source materials. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-yCc2bU4eI
