  1. Leadership Presentation Tracy Leavens SWE Region B Student Rep May 1, 2004

  2. Enthusiastic & Creative Organized & Productive Calm & Collected What Makes a Good Leader?

  3. Enthusiasm!!!!! • If you aren’t enthusiastic about your programs, who will be? • Be sure you have clearly defined the benefits of any event you hold • Ask yourself, “Would I honestly spend my time to get these benefits?”

  4. Leading by Example • No double talk! (If you expect your officers to do something, you have to do it too!!!) • DO NOT gossip or choose favorites, be as objective as possible in all your decision making • Do not act aloof, you are one of them. They need you to lead them, you need them for success.

  5. Goal Setting Big Picture Program Development Realistic Milestones Action Items

  6. Action Items • Always do a review at the end of the meeting • Creating this checklist helps a lot, make sure each item is very specific • NO: “Invite everyone to the banquet.” • YES: “Tracy will email the Dean tomorrow, Heather will contact the officers by Thursday, etc.”

  7. Running Meetings • Have a clear, specific agenda and stick to it! • Table items if the discussion is going nowhere • Form a committee, appoint a leader, give them a date you want feedback by • Interaction is key!

  8. Decision Making • Don’t be afraid to make a wrong decision. • As the leader, you are ultimately responsible for deciding and following through • The people you lead look to you for direction and guidance, so lead them!

  9. Delegation • Get people involved! • Give them ownership • When you infect others with enthusiasm, turnout will increase

  10. Follow-Up • How did we communicate before email and cell phones? • Performance management meetings

  11. Staying Caught Up • Two hours per day of email catch-up, phone calls, etc. • This is hard! This is the one I struggle the most with! • Keep current “To-Do” lists

  12. Be Prepared • Always have a plan B for location, activities, and discussion • Keep a contact list with you at all times • Plan agenda or order of the event well in advance to give you time to mull over it

  13. Recognition • Show the people you lead that you appreciate them, it feels good to go that extra mile • Offer your house and cooking skills for an officer social • Officer of the week • Most active member

  14. Where can I put all of these great leadership skills into practice? • SWE!!! • Student section • Region (RSR, Newsletter editor, RSC, Student Transition Team, Section Vitality) • National (RSR, COR rep, SWE President!)
