  1. Embedding quotations: Connie is referred to as "..if she were a treat he was going to gobble up". Arnold is characterized as a predator with a "nose long and hawk-like." Arnold's "long and hawk-like nose" depict him as a sinister predator. Even though Arnold's "familiar face".... Arnold was staring at Connie with his "familiar face" and "nose long and hawk-like" making him look like a predator. Arnold is characterized as being older given that his face "hadn't been shaved for a day". His "hawk-like nose" led him to Connie, and now he is going to "gobble her up like a "treat". Arnold Friend has been described as having a "nose long and hawk-like", which gives the reader an impression of his sinister appearance. Connie can be seen as Arnold's helpless victim, "a treat he was going to gobble up".

  2. " ... the nose long and hawk-like, sniffing as if she were a treat" gives him an unwelcome appearance. The quote, "And his face was a familiar face somehow...," suggests that there is something strange and mysterious about Arnold... She notices how Arnold's "jaw and chin and cheeks [were] slightly darkened" which insinuates to the reader that there might be more to Arnold than the first sight. "..the nose long and hawk-like " tells the reader that he is in fact somewhat of a predator in this scene. When Connie thinks that "his face was a familiar face, somehow," she is attempting to find a way to trust him. "The jaw and chin and cheeks slightly darkened." This shows Arnold is a bad guy. The portrayal of Connie as "a treat he was going to gobble up" shows that Conie is a form of prey to Arnold.
