  2. Unit 2 exam: timing • The exam is 1hr 15mins • Section A : 45mins ( 1 question comparing 2 poems) • Section B: 30mins (1 question analysing and unseen poem • Check your timing throughout the exam – the unseen is worth 12% of the marks

  3. How you are assessed • Both sections of the exam: AO1 and AO2 • Section A : AO1, AO2 and AO3 (compare) • AO1: your response to the poems using quotes from the poems to support your ideas. Think about how other readers might interpret the poems • AO2: write about writers’ methods: language/structure/form • AO3: compare what the poems are about and the ways in which they are written

Every paragraph… • PEED (POINT/EVIDENCE/EXPLAIN/DEVELOP • then compare…. • PEED 2nd poem • Do not makes points without supporting with a quotation – embed/focus on a specific word and its impact • Detailed interpretation of the language/method is essential - develop your analysis of language/methods to show sophistication

  5. A bit of A* (Born Yesterday) After the suddenly surprising list of adult qualities ‘enthralled’ hits a new note, emotional and almost magical, which leads to the ‘happiness’ in the last line, but in a very unconventional way. The rhyme, its effect doubled by being the only one in the poem serves to emphasise ‘enthralled’. Perhaps the speaker is letting his emotions show through.

  7. Unseen Question • Read the poem and the question very carefully • The question will give a focus for your response • Highlight your key points on the poem • Ensure that each paragraph begins with a topic sentence that relates to the focus of the question • Every paragraph must have quotation to support you points • PEED • Don’t be intimidated - ‘this could suggest…’ ‘an interpretation of this line could be….’ ‘another reader could interpret this as….’
