Background • Maryland Team is Co-chaired by Secretary Thomas Perez, Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and Secretary Catherine Raggio, Department of Disabilities • Supported by Governor and Lt. Governor • Workforce Development is one of three priorities areas for the Governor • Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) is a majority workforce and economic development activity for Maryland and Lt. Governor is leading the effort. • Transportation and housing are additional focus of BRAC

  4. BRAC IMPACT • Maryland faces the largest single employment growth activity since World War II as a result of BRAC.

  5. Maryland’s Project Will: • Identify and link job seekers with disabilities to opportunities made available as a result of BRAC. • Anticipate Maryland will gain more than 60,000 BRAC-related federal and private sector jobs of which only 35 to 40 percent current personnel currently holding jobs that will move will choose to relocate. • Job types include: military, civilian workforce (direct), contractors (indirect) • Additional job growth will occur in support service (induced) sectors such as retail and restaurants.

  6. Maryland’s Project Will: • Enhance the skills of job seekers with disabilities by retooling or realignment of existing training programs and dollars. Job types include: military, civilian workforce (direct), contractors (indirect) Additional job growth will occur in support service (induced) sectors such as retail and restaurants.

  7. Maryland’s Project Will: • Determine work incentives and strategies to ensure that “work pays” for individuals with disabilities. • Maryland has recently created a Medicaid Buy In, a Bridge Subsidy program for housing and efforts are underway to create a benefits counseling infrastructure.
