  2. Information • Author: Sarah Dessen • # of Pages: 422 • Genre: Drama

  3. About the Author • Sarah Dessen was born in 1970 in Illinois. She has written many books over the years and lives with her husband and daughter in the country.

  4. Summary Lock and Key tells the story of 17 year old Ruby Cooper. Ruby was abandoned by her alcoholic mother and had been living on her own until Child Protection Services sent her to live with her older sister, Cora and her husband, Jamie.

  5. Upon moving in with Cora and Jamie, Ruby meets Nate, her neighbor. Nate Cross is an all-around nice guy, but Ruby doesn’t want to make friends with him because he is not “her type”. Eventually though, Ruby and Nate start carpooling to school together and start dating.

  6. Soon after beginning her relationship with Nate, Ruby discovers that Nate’s father verbally and physically abuses him. But when Ruby tries to help, Nate shuts down and changes the subject. Ruby ends up helping Nate move out of his fathers house and into his mothers house in Arizona.

  7. Overall, Lock and Key was a very good book about love, life, and the power of friendship. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in sappy, chick-books. I give this book a 4 out of 4.
