  1. STEM EXPOSITION WORKSHOP #3 November 25, 2013

  2. Check in with participants • How's it going? • Any issues we can help with? • How many students are you working with?

  3. Collecting Data Science & Engineering

  4. What Kind of Data Do Scientist and Engineers Use? • Determine how researchers in your field of study interpret their data. • Take note of any mathematical formulas or equations that will be needed to describe the results of the experiment • Take note of any information that will be needed to build a prototype.

  5. Take Notes Each Day of the Project • Observations • Potential problems • Example of project notebook entry Notice errors are crossed out, never erased.

  6. Take Pictures • Observational data • Reminders of events • Use for display boards • Must be in focus & understandable by anyone!

  7. Numerical Data Science • controlled variables • independent (manipulated) variable • dependent (responding) variable Engineering • design criteria • prototype • rebuild

  8. Simple data table

  9. Monitor & Adjust …If When Something Goes Wrong • Most experiments/ designs do go "wrong”. • Keep a complete record in notebook!

  10. Analyzing Data Science & Engineering

  11. Questions to Ask When Looking at Data Science Investigation • Did I collect enough data? • Is the data accurate? • Did my results match my hypothesis? If, yes... How does the data supports this conclusion? If no… How does the data support this conclusion? Invention • Did I collect enough data? • Is the data accurate? • Did my results match my design requirements? If, yes... How does the data supports this conclusion? If no… How does the data support this conclusion?

  12. Graphs • Used to show how the hypothesis was answered or the design met the criteria for improvement • Most controlled investigations will be a XY Scatter • At least one for all projects! • http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/help/user_guide/graph/whentouse.asp

  13. Graphing Resources From the National Center for Educational Statistics Kids’ Zone • How to choose the right type of graph? http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/help/user_guide/graph/whentouse.asp • Create a Graph http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/

  14. Formulating Conclusions

  15. Conclusion tools • Sample Science Conclusion outline • Follow the Project checklists

  16. Registration New way to register
