  2. Kurt Donald Cobain • Born February 20, 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington • Early interest in art and music • Learned to play piano by ear • Parents divorced when he was 9 • Received beat up guitar from his uncle, for his 14th Birthday

  3. Teenage Cobain • Experimented with drugs in his early teens • Bounced around living with different relatives and friends • Developed his artistic talents (music and drawing) • Started his first band, Fecal Matter • Recorded a few songs, but never played any gigs

  4. Nirvana • Formed in 1987 • Formed by Kurt Cobain and KristNovoselic • Signature sound had elements of punk and heavy metal • Relied on dynamic contrast between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses • “Grunge” • Debut album… Bleach • About a Girl

  5. Blowing Up! • Signed to DGC records in 1991 • Released first major label album… Nevermind • Hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” • Sold over 7 million copies in the U.S. • Released compilation album Incesticide in December 1992 • In Utero was released September 1993

  6. Kurt & Courtney • Cobain met Courtney Love in 1990 at a show in Portland,Oregon • Married in February 1992 • Had a baby girl Frances Bean Cobain in August 1992 • Drug problems lead to custody battle with social services • Wild couple!

Drugs • His first drug experience was with marijuana in 1980 at age 13 • Consumed notable amounts of LSD • Suffered from alcoholism • Started using Heroin in the early 1990’s • Provided escape and relief from chronic stomach problems • Possible suicide attempt from overdose on the prescription drug Rohypnol on March 4, 1994

  8. R.I.P. • On April 8, 1994 after a long struggle with drugs, Kurt Cobain was found with a shotgun wound in the head. A high concentration of heroin and traces of Valium were found in Cobain's bloodstream. He was identifiable only by his fingerprints.
