  1. The Nature of Biology Inquiring Minds Need and Want to Know

  2. Data Quantitative Information Measurement-Understood by All Scientists • The counts or measurements of something- • Numerical Data • 5 Paramecium • SI System or Metric System • Only a few Base Units • Meter-length • Gram-mass • Liter-volume • Second-time • Celsius-temperature Multiples of 10

  3. Data Qualitative Information Kinds of Bird Beaks • Written Descriptions of what scientists observe • Useful because not all observations can be measured

  4. Science Methods Scientific Discovery Making Data Visual • Observations • Formulating Hypotheses • Performing Investigations • Collecting and Analyzing Data • Drawing Conclusions • Reporting Results

  5. Questions Questions Science Can Answer Questions Science Cannot Answer • The pathway that blood travels through the body • How disease spread through a flock of birds • How long it takes for a chick to hatch from an egg • The distance Canada Geese fly to reach warm climates during the winter • Decisions about good versus Evil • Ugly vs. Beautiful • Why life exists • If there is life after death

  6. Two Kinds of Science Pure Science Applied Science-Technology • Science carried out mainly for the sake of new knowledge

  7. Can Science Answer All Questions? • No • Science knowledge changes with new discoveries • Scientists use different methods to investigate the same question and may get different answers • Science will never be able to answer all of the questions we are able to ask • But you can use the processes of science to ask and answer questions about the natural world

  8. OF THINGS CHARACTERISTICS LIVING

  9. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS5 MINUTES

  10. Section 1.1 Summary – pages 3-10 Characteristics of Living Things All living things: • have an orderly structure 3. Grows and develops • produce offspring • grow and develop • adjust to changes in the environment

  11. All organisms are made of one or more cells. Cells are organized into tissues, organs, and organ systems. ORGANIZED All organisms reproduce and pass on traits from one generation to the next. REPRODUCE All organisms get larger (grow) and have a life cycle (develop). GROW AND DEVELOP All organisms respond to stimulus, use energy and release waste to maintain homeostasis, and adapt and evolve ADJUST TO CHANGES IN ENVIRONMENT

  12. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS O. R. G. A REPRODUCE ADJUST/ADAPT GROW AND DEVELOP ORGANIZED (made of cells) Characteristics of Life

  13. Chapter 1 1.1 Introduction to Biology The Eight Characteristics of Life 1. Made of one or more cells 2. Displays organization 3. Grows and develops 4. Reproduces 5. Responds to stimuli 6. Requires energy 7. Maintains homeostasis 8. Adaptations evolve over time

  14. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS C A R L G R E W CELLS ADAPT GROW LIFE CYCLE ENERGY (IN) REPRODUCE WASTE (OUT) RESPOND TO STIMULUS Characteristics of Life

  15. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGSModel Lesson-Investigation Guiding Question Determine which, if any, of the unknown substances is living and provide evidence to support your conclusion.

  16. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGSModel Lesson Materials • Hand lens • Paper towels • Water • Sugar water • Light Source • Plastic glove • Cotton balls • Petri dishes

  17. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGSModel LessonYou have 20 minutes to complete your observations and hypothesis!!
