  1. Here We Come, 2014! Presented by Dr. Diane DeBacker Commissioner of Education

What We Did in 2013? • Welcomed four new board members to the State Board of Education. • The State Board voted to make the 2013 Writing assessment voluntary. • Accepted the recommendation from the QPA Advisory Council to replace AYP with the four AMOs as well as to allow all schools to be recognized as “accredited” during the transitional year. • Approved the Emergency Safety Interventions guidelines. • Approved State Board mission, goals and objectives through 2014. • Approved the creation of a transitional assessment by CETE for the spring 2014 state assessment in math and English Language Arts. • Chairman Shaver sent a letter to Governor Brownback and the Kansas Legislature reminding them of the State Board’s constitutional authority and responsibilities. • Approved the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards for History, Government and Social Studies • Approved the Kansas College and Career Ready Science Standards. • Submitted a request to the Kansas Attorney General for an opinion on the Innovative Districts Act. • Moved to request the Kansas Legislature to fund the school finance formula according to law. • Moved to request the Kansas Legislature to fund all-day kindergarten. • Moved to request the Kansas Legislature to allocate funds for Agriculture in the Classroom and the Kansas Association of Conservation and Environmental Education. • Approved five actions to strengthen compliance from the field and the state with K.S.A. 72-1397 regarding the reporting of licensed personnel who have committed any offense or act outlined in the law. • Held a special session with member of the House and Senate Education Committees. • The Kansas State Department of Education moved to the Landon building after over 50 years in the Scott building. • Approved the Kansas Handwriting Curricular Standards. • Approved the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards for English Language Proficiency. • A redesign of the Kansas State Department of Education’s website was completed. • Acted on changes to K.S.A. 91-31-32 for Celebrate Freedom Week. • Approved CETE as the developer and vendor for the state summative assessments in math and English Language arts.

Math 2012 = 85% Reading 2012 = 87% College & Career Ready What % of Kansas Students perform at a CCR level on the new assessments? ????? We don’t know, but we need to be prepared to communicate that standards and assessments have changed!
