Smart Home Safety System: Fire and Break-In Alert via Text Messaging

This innovative prototype alerts homeowners of fires or break-ins by sending real-time text messages to their mobile phones. Unlike traditional smoke detectors, which lack communication with emergency services, our system directly connects to the internet, ensuring immediate notification even when homeowners are away. The project features advanced sensors for detecting smoke and intrusions, minimizing false alarms through calibrated sensitivity. With a critical response time of under one minute, our solution enhances residential safety effectively and reliably without the need for third-party security services.

  2. Concept and Motivation • Concept: This project will inform the individual in case of fire or break-in at the house by text-messaging of the cell phone. • Motivation: Not many residential structure’s smoke detectors are wired to the fire department or to individual. This prototype provides the efficient way to inform individual incase of troubled situation at home

  3. Competitive Analysis • CasesFirst Alert SA302 Smoke Alarm • Features: • Photoelectric and ionization sensor for detection of smoldering and flaming fire • IR remote control technology for hassle-free silencing and testing • Rear-mounted sensor placement • Differences: • Smoke alarm is Directly connected to internet and will be able to send text-message to the home owner • Does not need to hire commercial house security product or company • Home owner will be able to receive smoke notice even if he is not at home4

  4. Requirements • 1. Functional requirement: • a. Sense the smoke or ‘break-in’ and notify mainframe. (tmote) • b. The mainframe acknowledges the sensor notifications. • c. The mainframe sends out the network packet to the internet text messaging service • d. The text messaging service sends text message to each individual • 2. Non-functional requirement • a. Timing requirement: This is time critical mission. It should not take longer than a minute from sensing to text messaging. • b. Reliability requirement: It should minimize the ‘False Alarm’ by calibrating the sensitivity of each sensor.

  5. Technical Spec • ARM/XScale Processor • Three TMotes and Batteries • CO2 Sensor • Directional IR Radial Sensor • Ethernet Cable • Router • Soldering Iron and Lead • Mobile Phone with Text Messaging
