Illinois Section …getting started • Getting started • Lots of ad-hoc interest • Needed coordination and structure • Core group of the most active led the way • Methods of engagement • Committee and Section email blasts • Newsletter articles • Student chapters • Technical groups • Website ads / calendars / social media

Illinois Section …timeline for success (2008) Committee established & exploration of options • Added some small activities to already established interests • Started planning for participation in larger activities (2009-2010) Member engagement to grow volunteer manpower • Added manpower as participation and # of events grew • Some of these became larger annual activities that we continued year–to-year (2011- 2012) Assessment and evaluation of where we are • 5 – 10 events per year • 2 – 20 volunteers depending on the need • Establishing second committee

Illinois Section …lessons learned • Use shotgun/dartboard approach to get started • Member ‘Champions’ • Section Board, Committees and Technical Groups • STEM related groups /organizations in your area • Student chapters at local colleges • Active individuals with kids in school • Other engineering organizations (SWE, ACEC, SAME, etc.) • A two-pronged outreach approach is indicated • Schools and school districts • Extra curricular opportunities (Scouts, museums, libraries, Future Cities, etc.)

Illinois Section …schools and districts • Appreciate science and technology related material • Seek real world career connections for students • May have a career coordinator to contact Strengths • Coordination window is July – September • Communication is harder as the year progresses • School activities take place during working hours • Funding is sparse Challenges

  8. Illinois Section …schools and districts Making it work! • Be proactive and sensitive to their needs • Communication is key! • Start small to gain trust • Judge science fairs • Participate in career days • Keep events on a calendar and check-in annually Queen of Angels Science Fair

Illinois Section …other organizations • Motivated and organized • Have established objectives and goals • Contact person makes communication easy • Some funding available • Complementary resources • Events are outside working hours • Flexible Strengths • Sometimes hard to search out! • Can be protective of their turf • Staff turnover may be frequent • Some only want $$ Challenges
